LSU course

I’m changing my tune on this course. Yes, the greens are pretty horrible. But the layout is kinda fun. And it’s not super packed. After two days of being turned away from Webb due to insane traffic, I went over to LSU yesterday. Sorta a sleepy little course when i was there.
Throw in the range and sand trap practice area.... screw it. I’m in.

I’m with you on this one. I’ve got two young kids so time is always important and if I can just get 9 holes in with out waiting that’s as good as gold for me.

I’m a Beaver Creek addict right now. Living in central, it’s only a 6 minute longer drive than to Santa Maria, plus it’s the best public practice area in BR and is deserted on weekdays.

I would play it if I could find my call after hitting if a centimeter off the fairway.

Beaver Creek looked good the other day. Not much play neither and it was mid-morning on Saturday.

Seriously. Hitting it a LITTLE off is a death sentence. It’s cut like they just had the US Open out there.

Ha. I topped a drive and lost it about 25 feet from me.

Just played it. My goodness, it was great playing a course that was nearly empty.
My goodness, I’ve never played a course with worse maintenance. It would be a better course if they turned it over to the Ag Department and let them graze sheep on it. Sad what it has become. Overpriced by a factor of 4. At least.

It's a damned shame too. As I approach 50, I realize many things in life change and things can't stay the same, but the demise of this course really hits close to home. As a student in the late 80s/early 90s, I wore that place out. Student green fees were $5, and $2.50 at twilight. I was there often. And Mike used to hire a lot of "talent" to run the register, so the customer service was exemplary.
The old front 9 was awesome and I was sad when it disappeared, but I quickly warmed up to the new holes and layout and enjoyed a lot of rounds out there also.
I haven't been in over a year, mainly based on what I have heard and read on here. I'm playing as much golf as I ever have and wish LSU was still in the rotation, but I have a feeling I've played my last round there.

I worked there from ‘07 - ‘12. Started in high school and “got fired” when I graduated from LSU. Mike Johnson must’ve worked 80 hour weeks my entire time as an employee. He’s truly a class act. I haven’t played Santa Maria since early last year but I imagine he’s done well there as well. LSU seems to have gone downhill since Mike retired.

Yes and Yes.
Santa Maria is in very good shape. And I suppose when you lose someone like him, your course is inevitably going to suffer a little, but where it is now is too far gone.
Mike must have seen the handwriting on the wall and he got out at the right time.

I don’t know the name of the guy who took over for Mike but he’s always acted like a fricking cocksucker and it’s no shock the course sucks now
I haven't played LSU in a year, and part of that was because of how big of a bitch that old man is. I had 2 semi-run ins with him last summer and I stopped going. Now I hear how bad it is and I have no desire to return.

I was at LSU while you were, probably saw me on that course a few times. Mike is a good dude. He had SM on the right path. It’s in as good of shape as I’ve seen it

Worked there from ‘14-‘19, mike retired my first year working there. You would’ve worked with my brother while you were there
It’s a fun course, especially when you get to play for free all the time. It doesn’t get any attention or proper funding from LSU, especially once mike left. They’ve been trying to close it down
The guy who took over for mike, Steve, has his hands full and is out of his league.

PGA golf professionals don't get much better than Mike Johnson!

The LSU Golf course went downhill in a hurry when Mitch Fontenot left. Mitch was the golf course superintendent from 2003-2018. Golf course superintendents are responsible for playing conditions.

If that's the guy who just sits at the folding table in the back with a scowl on his face and bitches at everyone who walks past, I believe it.

Between this and the poor old fricks who can't afford a private course so they want to treat a $25 public course as if it's their country club, it's not worth going to LSU. That doesn't even include the painful pace of play when you're behind a wall of groups that DGAF.
