Write ups from nbadraftroom.com, stats are per 36 minutes
LaMelo Ball (top 5 pick)
Killian Hayes (top 10)
Tyrese Haliburton (top 10)
Cole Anthony (late lotto-mid first round pick)
Kira Lewis Jr. (mid first round)
Tyrell Terry (Wide range, first round to early second round pick)
LaMelo Ball (top 5 pick)
quote:
19.6 PTS 8.7 REB 7.9 AST 0.1 BLK 1.8 STL
quote:
PG – USA – Ht – 6-7 – Wt – 180 – Wing – 6-10 – Int.01 – Point guard isn’t the biggest need for the Hornets but after moving up to no.3 they could target the media magnet that is LaMelo Ball. Ball would be the face of a franchise that is in need of an identity
Killian Hayes (top 10)
quote:
16.8 PTS 4.1 REB 7.8 AST 0.4 BLK 2.1 ST
quote:
PG – France – Ht – 6-5 – Wt – 215 – Wing – 6-7 – Int.01 – The Pistons drop to no.7 but could land Killian Hayes who fits a need and has big time upside. Killian will help give the franchise direction during the rebuild…and the Pistons will likely be near the top of the lottery again in 2021
Tyrese Haliburton (top 10)
quote:
14.9 PTS 5.8 REB 6.3 AST 0.7 BLK 2.4 STL
quote:
PG – Iowa State – Ht – 6-5 – Wt – 170 – Wing – 6-8+ – So – The Knicks bad luck continues but this could be a blessing in disguise, if they land the pro-ready Haliburton. LaMelo is the sexy name but Hali could be better early and has a much higher floor than some of the likely top 5 guys.
Cole Anthony (late lotto-mid first round pick)
quote:
19.1 PTS 5.9 REB 4.1 AST 0.3 BLK 1.4 ST
quote:
PG – UNC – Ht – 6-3 – Wt – 185 – Wing – 6-3 1/2 – Fr – Cole had a tough freshman year, struggling with his finishing at the rim and with turnovers. He’s a streaky scorer who will have a long career but might not be a star.
Kira Lewis Jr. (mid first round)
quote:
17.7 PTS 4.6 REB 5.0 AST 0.6 BLK 1.7 ST
quote:
PG – Alabama – HT: 6-3 – WT: 165 – WING: 6-7 – So. – A speedy lead guard who plays with an extra gear. Very young for his class and already playing at a high level, showing high BBIQ and playing an efficient game.
Tyrell Terry (Wide range, first round to early second round pick)
quote:
16.2 PTS 5.0 REB 3.5 AST 0.1 BLK 1.5 STL
quote:
PG – Stanford – HT: 6-2 – WT: 165 – WING: NA – Fr – A sweet-shooting guard who has a scorer’s mentality and gets his shot off quickly. A bit undersized and will struggle to guard in the League but his offensive talent is special.

I like Killian Hayes the most, but here are my notes on Lewis and Anthony:
Kira Lewis Strengths:
-Lightening quick, very good first step. One of the quickest players in recent years.
-Attacker offensively, does a good job getting to the rim, but only an average finisher (more on that later)
-Very good off ball. Moves well, understands how to make himself available. 85th percentile as spot up shooter.
-Good shooter off dribble. Can go either direction.
-Lacks elite court vision, but good enough that he’s a threat to score or facilitate with his attacking style.
-Very good ball handler in the PnR. Can score from all three levels or dish.
-Good on ball defender, quick laterally, technically sound.
-Good team defender and off ball defender, but tends to get caught ball watching.
Weaknesses:
-Plays to fast at times, needs to learn to be more patient.
-Only 165 lbs. Lack of strength hampers him. Ex: Finishing and ability to switch defensively.
-Lightning quick but not necessarily explosive. Doesn’t finish over people.
Cole Anthony Strengths:
-Scorers mentality.
-Variety of dribble moves.
-Good range and 3pt making ability. Comfortable off screens, off dribble, etc.
-Comfortable with the midrange game. Variety of floaters, runners, jumpers, etc.
-Compact ball handler, keeps ball close to body, dribble low, etc.
-Good athleticism, explosion, and size for a PG. 6’3” 190 6’5” wingspan.
-Pesky on ball defender. Has quick feet, quick hands, and reacts quickly.
-Great awareness and team defender. Does an excellent job seeing man and ball. Physical defender, does the little things a lot of the Pelicans defenders don’t.
Weaknesses:
-Numbers say he’s a poor shooter, but I think he’s better than he showed in college.
-Shot selection is really poor at times. Often thinks his shot is the best shot.
-Lacks vision, misses a lot of open teammates. Question here is did he miss them, or not have confidence in them? I think he’s a better passer than he showed at UNC, but he’s not someone who sees the game ahead. Reactionary passer.

Kira Lewis is basically De'Aaron Fox with a good jumpshot. I say take him at 13.

I like Kira as well. I think if we were to get multiple picks this draft, id take him at 13

I like Kira at 13, and I could live with Cole Anthony at 13. I not that big of a fan of Terry until later.

I like Anthony, I think he could be a star in the league. One of those Donovan Mitchell type picks where people will ask “why did he drop so far?”.

I’m a UNC fan and I can say without hesitation that I wouldn’t touch Anthony in the draft from what I saw of him this year. The guy is an inefficient chucker. My least favorite kind of player.
Maybe he’ll do better in the league not having to carry the load, and get better open shots. But I feel like his dna is to be what he was at UNC.

I watched him get destroyed by Tre Jones, who isn’t someone anyone would mistake for a good scoring guard. Jones had his way with Anthony.
I’m rooting for the kid obviously, but I didn’t like anything I saw from him.

I am no fan of Cole Anthony. I'm sorry, but if you can't lead UNC to a even a tourney berth, you aren't that good.
I do like Kira Lewis a lot. Very athletic with long arms. He is young so he may still grow a bit, but i do worry about his size at 165. he's got to add some bulk.
Lou Williams is 175, and is almost always the smallest guy out there, and is a horrible defender b/c of it, same with Dennis Schroeder. If you're going to be that light, you better be a damn good scorer to offset it. Hard to keep a guy that small playing with starters. You're almost always relegated to playing against the backups where your defense won't be exposed as much.

Kira's height, wingspan, and weight are all almost identical to Fox coming out of college and he's become a good defender already, so at least you can see an avenue for Kira on that end if he can add some muscle. And at least Kira was good defensively in college as well.
I have a short board for guys potentially available at PG for us. (1) Killian (2) Kira (3) Maxey if you see him playing that position. Other than that, there's a bunch of other guys on the board at other positions who I'd rather draft than the other PGs.

quote:His team was not very good. His shot selection was pretty bad, and was probably due to the team that was surrounding him. But, he has an elite handle, and can shoot the 3 off the dribble. Which are the two traits that I think are most important for a lead ball handler in the league. Worst case for him, IMO, is that he's a microwave that can come off the bench and when he's on he can put up 20+ in a given game. Best case, he's a star lead ball handler, Kyrie, Dame, Kemba, etc...

Ben Simmons didn't lead LSU to a NCAA berth, I guess that guy sucks too
I'm not all in on Cole Anthony, I just think he has a really high ceiling. I also really like Aaron Nesmith.

Johnny Jones isn't Roy Williams, and LSU hadn't been to the tournament 16 of the last 17 years like UNC had, and the one year they didn't make it, they lost in the NIT finals.

Anthony is definitely being overlooked. Reminds me of the knock on Donovan Mitchell coming out of Louisville.
Posted on 8/24/20 at 5:52 pm to TeddyPadillac
That LSU team was more talented than the UNC team this season.

Anthony wasn’t good at UNC, but the thing with him is there’s visual evidence of why he wasn’t good. The entire team was bad, the spacing was bad, they were in the 11th percentile in 3pt shooting, etc etc.
I’m not saying he’s gonna be Dame, but he’s gonna be better than he was at UNC.

Right, and it’s not like we have no information on him from before he went to UNC. It wasn’t a good fit. But he has the pedigree, and skills to be a player in this league, IMO.

It's North Carolina, not Davidson, or Weber State, or LeHigh. The entire team wasn't bad, and if Anthony was great, he would have made them better. It's not like they have some shitty coach.
THey had a losing overall record.
Dean Smith started coaching in 1962. That team finished 8-9. Over the next 58 years they had 1 losing season, in 2002 during Doherty's terrible 3 year stint as the head coach. This is their 2nd losing season in 58 years. That's not easy to do.
I'm not saying Anthony won't be a good NBA player, but he is not someone i would label as a sleeper like Donovan Mitchell or Devin Booker. Great players should excel in college.
Chris Paul took Wake Forest to the tourney both years he was there, departing in 2005. They have made the tourney 4 times since he left, and been over .500 only 5 times during that time span. He played with a bunch of nobodies and finished 3rd and 2nd in the ACC, not 2nd to last.
Posted on 8/25/20 at 9:02 am to TeddyPadillac
Regardless, in the NBA he won't be relied upon as heavily as he was at UNC. IMO, the skills of the player matters more than how good their college team was when evaluating players for the draft. He'll be in a completely different situation in the NBA.
Put up similar numbers to Anthony, in college.
Was a role player who played ~20 mpg in college, didn't even start for his team. He was drafted based upon his skills, not his college production.
I hope you don't like Aaron Nesmith, his team went 11-21

Just because it’s North Carolina doesn’t mean they can’t have bad teams. That team was bad, no other way around it. I don’t care who the player is, you put them in that situation and teams are packing the paint, or you have no teammates you trust, they’re going to struggle.
And let’s not act like UNC is some perennial top 3 team in the country that hasn’t had off years in recent history. They’ve finished outside the top 25 three times in the last decade, and they finished 15th and 19th two other years. The last decade they’ve spent just as much as time being irrelevant as they have being relevant.

Led his team to a 2nd place finish in the ACC. You've never heard of anyone else from that team.

Played that lone season with 8 guys who played in the NBA at some point. AD wasn't drafted based on production either. Kentucky is a different animal.

As i said before, i'm not trying to say Cole Anthony won't be a good NBA player just b/c his college team wasn't good. He may turn out to be a quality starter in the NBA. His college experience tells me he's a role player at best, just like Nesmith. There are always exceptions, but i think history tells me that he has a lot of bust potential and his ceiling is a good role player, which I don't say as a bad thing when picking in the teens of the nba draft.
