This isn't a simple brainteaser at all. A hanging wire forms a catenary, and to solve for the distance you need calculus.

ETA: i'm dumb, I missed the fact that the low point of the cable was 40m from the top. Right next to each other. Cable has to be doubled on itself.

You dumb...

The only way for the midpoint of an 80 meter wire to be 10 meter off the ground from a 50 meter pole is if it is hanging straight down.

I disagree with you. Simple math tells you that an 80 meter cable that has its bottom tip 40m below the top means that there is no lateral distance between the poles. In other words -- if it were a straight line to the bottom, you'd have a right triangle with one leg = 40m (the drop) and the hypotenuse = 40m (the length of the cable). That leaves the other leg = 0.
