Is there a way to do a one layer gravel drive way? If I was going to do it with just one layer, what size rock would you recommend?

All I can tell you is that if your gravel level is thin, you'll eventually have weeds growing up in the middle of the driveway

Really not possible. It would have to be rip rap, which would absolutely suck to drive on. Just get a standard 610 or 57 stone driveway.

Level driveway, lay down a good DOTD rated geotextile, install 610 limestone minimum 6" and compact very well. If you don't turn hard or spin tires it will last a long time

#2 would be your best bet for your thinking.

EasyPave Grid

You would need this probably. Only gravel paving system I know of that claims you don’t need a base layer.

Don't use gravel. Use crushed concrete.

#57 is what I was leaning towards, I was just curious how screwed I would be if I skipped the 8 inches of base layer?

I wouldn’t skimp on preparing a proper base. It’s the most critical piece.

Didn’t like my gravel driveway so layered concrete instead. It was a disaster between the weeds and thinning and getting in the car and being tracked everywhere.

If you do it too thin the gravel will just get pushed into the mud after a couple months causing you to get a few more layers if gravel. Might as as well just cough up the money and do it right the first time
