I’m surprised nobody has pointed out the elephant in the room which is their ownership being cheap. If Cleveland had re-signed Belle and didn’t trade away Lofton before the ‘97 season, they beat the Marlins in the World Series and might have even beaten the Yankees in the ‘98 ALCS.

Us Tribe fans are used to it by now. It actually pains me that they haven’t won a WS since 48. frick...just give me 1. The two Game 7 losses were both in extras also. Absolutely, gut-wrenching shite.

In 97 Belle provided a 116 OPS+ for the White Sox, Giles provided a 112 for the Indians that was not the issue....
While as Lofton was worth a 119+ OPS with the Braves and Grissom a 83 OPS+ with the Indians.

However David Justice and Jim Thome more than made up for the difference as the players they replaced they destroyed. Thome 156 OPS+ vs Franco 124 OPS+ and Justice 158 OPS+ vs Murray 83 OPS+

So offensively they were better in 1997 than in 1996 and 1995
