Major League Baseball & It's Implications On Fall Sports (Pro and Collegiate)

It's been reported this morning that the Miami Marlins had 14 players and a coach test positive for COVID-19. due to this, they've cancelled their home opener today. Also, trickling down, their last opponent (Phillies) have since cancelled their game today against the Yankees. MLB top brass have scheduled a 12:30 meeting with all owners today. Reading the tea leaves, it's more and more people are starting to whisper that the season potentially could be cancelled. This would have an enormous impact on the plans of the NFL and college fall sports (i.e. football) across the country.

Is that 12:30 EST? Just wondering when to keep an eye out for news updates.
But if the MLB cancels their season after one weekend I don’t see how college football or the NFL could continue. Baseball is a pretty socially distant sport. If COVID spreads in baseball imagine what it will do in basketball and football.
I would be shocked if college football is anywhere close to being normal this season. I have little confidence we will even have a season in the fall.

I can’t see how this is anything but bad news for football. College football has 85 players plus coaching staff, media, etc who has to travel. Even if games are only in conference, we are talking about 1500-1700 (or more) people who would would have to stay COVID free to play continuously. Given the contact nature of football, it seems unlikely that cases, which are likely inevitable, could be isolated.
As much as I want football, it seems it’s becoming more likely it won’t happen, at least this fall.

Multiple pulmonary specialists and virologists have stated since March that infected humans do not exhale the virus when the temperature is above 85 degrees, just like other viruses.
What that means is at this time of year, the virus is only being spread in air conditioned buildings. Contact tracing showing such extreme low transmissions among protestors and at outdoor events in the south has supported these claims.
It’s been a consistent and credible claim that has been largely ignored in the media.

This virus will be there at whatever and whenever time people leave their homes and go into the world. It doesn’t matter if that is tomorrow or next week or next year. When they open society up fully again there will be a spike in cases again.
Protect the most at risk if you are scared of the virus stay home and let everyone else that understand the risks and are willing to take it live their lives.

I’ve heard several specialists speaking at press conferences repeat the same thing for several months. I’ll see if I can find you a link or two.

Not sure if credible or not, but is was stated on sports talk today that due to a delay, the Marlins were aboard their team bus for more than two hours last week. Perfect environment to spread. There have been several MLB teams who have had players test positive. So far, the Marlins are the only team with a widespread outbreak. Maybe their is a reason for it. Could be a break in protocol.

And not one of them will even end up legitimately hospitalized

That’s a lot of people who will be talking about how lucky they were that they had the most deadly virus ever but had zero symptoms or were over it in a day.

That’s my whole point. Whenever things open up cases are going to rise. It is going to happen the next time. You aren’t stopping the virus with these shutdowns. You are postponing it.

This is actually a real problem.
