If I close on a piece of property at the end of the month, I am definitely putting in a home generators to run my home.
Any opinions on which is better Generac or Kohler?
And it the extended warranty a must ?

I just started looking at those. My problem, no gas. It's got to be a diesel.

I have a 22kw generac for a couple years now with no issues.

I’m in the same boat, closing Aug 14. Decided on a 22 Generac

Get a 10,000-12,000 watt portable generator and an interlock switch installed on your main feed panel. You’ll be able to run everything in the average sized home except the central AC and oven. I just did this in April and I can run three window units at one time along with almost all lights. Turn off window units for a bit to heat up the water heater for showers. Turn off water heater switch then turn the window units back on. Need to wash clothes? Turn off window units and run the washer. Run dryer afterwards. You won’t be able to run everything at once obviously but I think you can deal with almost all your necessities, even if they’re only one at a time, during a temporary power outage. You’ll save THOUSANDS of dollars this way.

How big of a place are you powering?
If its big, get a liquid cooled and check the rpms the generator runs at. The lower the better.

Kohler is what you want, not Generac...not personal experience, that's just what everyone says.

2550 sq ft one story and I have to have AC in Texas.
I have a 5 ton AC unit. Will a 22kw run everything within reason.
Does the liquid cooled cost more ? My junction box is on one side and the gas meter is on the other side of the house.
I am thinking 11 grand total and is that in the ballpark and I believe that the Centerpoint Energy has a discount on Kholers.

Hell yes, but it is quiet as a ac condensor.

Drives up the price

Kholers liquid cooled is going to be more than that.

I can go up to 15 grand total. I live in a master planned community so the quieter unit may make sense.

We have a Generac 14kw that runs on Natural Gas. Good machine!

I have a 22kw air cooled generac and have had no issues in the 5+ years I have had it.
I have a service contract on it, they come out and maintain it twice a year for about 300 dollars.

The Generac is fine. They are probably 90% (100% here by me) of the market so any time you hear about home generator issues its going to be on a generac because thats what everyone owns. We have installed many over the years and haven't had many issues that weren't age related.

My 16KW nat. gas Generac Guardian is still going strong after 14 years

Had a Generac at our last home and had zero issues with it. Installed a 22kw in the house we just build as well. No concerns over reliability from me.

You might be able to get a generac liquid cooled installed for under $15k but that'd be the only brand as any other brand would be over $11k for the generator alone. As the other poster said, since your electrical and gas aren't on the same side of the house, this drives your install price way up.
Eta: if you get a generac, get the extended warranty

Says a lot.
IMO you want need a water cooled engine....unless you are going big time KW. 20/22 KW Air Cooled is probably all you need.

quote:Almost certainly. I think the generac 22kw will only put out 19.5kw on nat gas, but that should still be plenty.

I had a unit installed just a few weeks ago, and during the quote visit we did a max load test. I have two AC units (a 4 ton and 3.5 ton for ~3300sqft), a double electric oven, and an electric dryer. I fired up both ovens, both ACs, the dryer, the microwave, computers, a couple TVs, lights, etc. and my house was pulling 24kw. I will obviously never approach that on a typical day, especially not if I'm on backup power and being "cautious". I do have a gas stove, gas water heaters, and LEDs throughout the house, so those might be considerations for you. But really it's that double electric oven using 6-7kw alone that is the killer for me, but using both at once is a rare occasion anyway, and I certainly wouldn't try to make the generator run them both.
Hope this eases your concern over being able to run your house, and your installer will be sure you get the right size. I think 22 is the biggest Generac sells in a residential model, anyway.
