Them: Name the best players in the MLS Dbyrd2.
Me: Chicharito, Nani, Higuain… wait, you expected American players? Ummm… Busio seems good.

The best American players go abroad, so I don’t think this is a gotcha. Aaron Long/Jordan Morris are probably the best Americans currently playing in MLS but Clark is headed to Leipzig and a European team is picking up Cowell sooner rather than later. Busio will be in Série A and Araujo in La Liga within the next two years. Based on current form you could make the same argument about Leon Flach probably going back to Germany soon. Aaronson and McKenzie were some of the best players prior to leaving. Nagbe still plays at a high level and could replace Yueill on the national team if he gave a shite. Nyeman was recently ranked by the guardian as one of the top youth prospects in the world. Those popped in my head in like two seconds and I would rather have them on my team than some of the “retirement” euro guys. This doesn’t take into account the young South American players like Rossi and Atuesta at LAFC and Barco at Atlanta (with Pity and Almiron having already been sold off) who are fun to watch and bucks the retirement cliché.
As for the ones you mentioned, Nani has been pretty consistently solid. Chicha was garbage until this year. Higuain has been meh. His brother has been better, and for longer, in this league.
Just blindly naming the big euro names tells me you don’t watch much MLS. I encourage you to start watching more. ESPN+ is fantastic and I can watch most games there. The quality of the league has improved by leaps and bounds over the past five years and while not EPL quality it’s still fun to watch and the young talent in this league, especially American talent, is nothing to scoff at.
