Why do these Johnny Six Pack's love being called "captain" so much? Ships have captains; fishing boats just have some dude driving it.

If you spend any amount of time offshore you will find that there is an unlimited number of ways other boaters will find to endanger their lives and everyone with them. Jon boats 30 miles out, sure, no safety gear or maintenance, all the time. Hell just follow qualified captain on instagram, unlimited entertainment.

Idiots are everywhere, but, if you hold a credential from the USCG and you don't render aid, not only did you not do the right thing, you're breaking the law. I have pulled a decent number of people out of the water, most got there by doing something incredibly stupid, but that doesn't really matter.

There are only 3 scenarios where someone should be referred to as Captain.
1) a military officer with the rank of captain
2) an individual in command of a merchant ship who, preferably, holds an unlimited tonnage master's license from their flag state authority.
3) a merchant mariner employed as a ship pilot (used as a sign of respect)

Anyone else who refers to themselves in such capacity sounds like a douche.
