You make more out West. You just do.

Deep South doesn’t pay anywhere near that. I know a lot of rad techs.

Ironically, doctors make less.

There are ER doctors here who barely clear 200k a year

I am in Northern California. When I was in L.A. it was slightly less. Not all of the hospitals there pay 1/2 time for call either...some only pay $15 or so? But anywhere north of Santa Barbara essentially falls into the Northern California region. I love it here and its great money. There aren't many careers that you can support your family on one person working part time. Go to school on the East coast though. It's cheaper.

She always posts super high salaries for nurses in Cali. She may be right, but I can’t say one way or another as I have never worked there.

I imagine it's largely offset by the cost of living
Posted on 7/12/20 at 9:36 pm to GeauxTigers123
There is a reason its the Mecca for nursing.
Edit: Yes, if you live in the city or L.A. proper its very expensive. I live in a great school district and my home is maybe 100K more than if I lived in a comparable area of Alabama?

Any rad techs?
Thinking about starting a new career. Is night school a possibility? Advantages? Disadvantages?
Depending on where you live it can be kind of a competitive field to get into. Once in, it opens up to a ton of Allied fields associated with it to specialize like NM, US, Rad Therapy, CT, MRI, Cath Lab, Spec procedures etc...
That said, being an Xray technologists can be kind of boring and repetitious unless you work at a major trauma hospital or surgery center. There is constant pressure to be registered and stay that way with continuing medical education (like nurses, therapists, etc...)
Doing portables can be tough on your back and the radiologists can be absolute pricks. Usually, there is at least one a-hole in every group.
Anyway, the pay is OK, not great. Some specialties make bank though. Usually, radiology departments have some fun characters to horse around with.

I just had no fricking clue rad techs were pulling 200k a year some places

If I was better at posting pics I would send the pay rates from our union contract. Its not to brag, its because people in the south need to expect better pay and force the industry to pay fair wages. There is no excuse for California to pay so much more than the South East. New Orleans isn't cheap and their hospitals make plenty. I should make less and the south should make more.

Well 30 seconds on indeed with give you plenty of results to show average is about $40 an hour for a rad tech in San Francisco. That’s a lot of hours to get to 200k

I’m not a nurse, but I know a ton of them. A former coworker told me that his wife (in Louisiana) could have gotten a 20k+ raise just by moving to Dallas (comparing her to another relative). So I assume LA must be on the low end.
Edit: for clarification this story was about a nurse
