Kids need parent(s). If that's not you, then don't adopt. But don't lump the rest of everyone in that group.
Sorry to rant but that pisses me off.
I never suggested that they didn't; however, you can be a good parent without making it formal through the legal system. For every story like yours, there are probably hundreds that didn't work out that way and the dude got screwed.

You can. I'm not disputing that.
What I'm saying, is that I got tired of seeing my daughter have no parental continuity. I legally adopted to avoid the possibility of her mom running off and taking her away from me. Let's just say bio-mom had a history of instability, and I could predict what was going to happen, so I was proactive and had my defense (offense) planned out long before the situation played out.
I've lost a lot in my life, like many people. But I was not about to lose the very first child that ever called me "daddy" without a written order and a law enforcement official physically ripping her from my arms.
That's why I adopted. To give my daughter stability. If I hadn't done so, my daughter would have already been dragged through 11 boyfriends and 12 school districts in the last 7 years...
...and instead, she's entering her junior year having attended the same city schools since kindergarten.
