You'd be spending more than you currently are on health care premiums and in taxes because the former is based on corporate profits and the latter is driven by zoning and regulations. Your income would be far less than it is today.

Medicare/Medicaid allow the US to provide health insurance to those who do not have the ability or the desire to pay and some level of income to those who can't or won't earn that income of their own accord. Keep in mind there is no free lunch....if someone gets sick and receives treatment the only pool of money which can be dipped into for those expenses is the pool of money made up by those of us who do pay....the provider ain't taking it out of their end and if you doubt they treat regardless of ability to pay please explain the preponderance of medical collection firms located near every medical center and medical professional complex anywhere in the US. Providers provide, some people pay everything, some pay a portion and some pay none....but the only pool of money which can cover these costs come from the pockets of consumers. If you are a responsible individual you are going to subsidize the costs of those who can't pay (very few people resent this) as well as the costs of those who will not pay because we, as a society, are not willing to turn away those who can't or won't pay and, more importantly, providers are not willing to do so....and that is really all that matters...we can't legislate what a provider does as far as treating patients and their ability to pay.

Social Security provides some level of income for those who, again, can't or won't provide that income on their own. Again, very few resent doing so for the elderly, the truly disabled or the orphaned child. It is the able bodied dead beat most resent, and rightfully so. However, again, there is no free lunch...so anytime we pass any kind of regulation, at any level, which requires a person to do something, there is a cost related to that requirement. Immediately things like zoning ordinances and building codes come to mind. We could decide to live in a nation where such things do not exist and people who choose to do so or are forced to do so could live in carboard boxes like they do in a lot of third world countries. But if we don't want that impact on our own property we have to ensure that those who can't or won't provide for their own needs are not impacting our ability to do so. The same goes for things like public health...again, we could live in a nation where there is no public sanitation and water but we have to decide between people shitting in the street and not...it is up to us...if we decide we don't want them shitting in the street we either have to kill them or provide them a place other than the street to shite. Neither, by the way, can be done for free because, again, there is no such thing as free lunch....even killing all the deadbeats would require killing them, at least a bullet and a bounty or a salary, and then something has to be done with the corpse...even burning them or burying them in mass graves comes with a cost.

We have options. We can live like people live in a third world nation if we decide to do so...it is up to us.

I don't like to think about that.....I get very angry when I calculate how much money me and the wife and our employers have paid into SS over 40 years......we would be considerably wealthier than we are now.
