You obviously were not there. It was a different time and a different era and LSU had not been really dominant in a good while. LSU was rarely on TV at that time so it was 180 degrees different from where we are today.

Not correct. This is my video I recorded on a betamax video in 1979 on ESPN. The game was shown on ESPN on tape delay. At the 19 second mark you can see the ESPN banner hanging on the fence (although barely able to read). Notice the announcers are different from the west coast broadcast. I believe Jim Simpson is doing the game here.

ESPN may have gotten footage of the game from the USC broadcast
No Espn broadcast the game.
There are 3 broadcast teams:
ESPN's, USC and LSU (Jimmy Taylor is one of the LSU team if I remember correct).
Live broadcast may have been only the USC team, LSU team is tape delayed due to Louisiana laws. Epsn team could have been live, most forget satellite dishes at the time picked the game up.
More pictures of the game are easy to come by as there are many photographers at the game including John M. (who has a lot of shots of the game),
ESPN signs are all over the stadium that night and was on the camera covers.
I have the USC and Epsn broadcast tapes of the game and there are a few people I know with the LSU broadcast team (all on Beta).

I was there, great game, we got hosed.
I was there also and we didn't get "hosed". The penalty was legit and we lost.
BUT it was the greatest game I ever witnessed in Tiger Stadium.

We got hosed because the whole right side of the USC OL jumped early. The play should have been blown dead and the facemask would have never happened.

I remember listening to that game on the radio. I could barely hear her saying the card was so loud. USC was fortunate to win that game. However, in truth, LSU was fortunate that it was even that close. I’m pretty sure USC had about 390 total yards and LSU about 270. I think LSU recovered two of five fumbles. LSU played their hearts out. Definitely the most memorable game for me

So where can I watch this game in its entirety? This game was a full 10+ years before I was born, but it has fascinated ever I learned about it.
ETA: annnnd it’s in OP, nvm

Well I am trying to find a shot of a USC player throwing a football at an LSU fan (my Dad the legendary harasser) in the stands

that is so odd because ESPN came to exist 2 weeks before the LSU USC game and if you google research it everything says their first football broadcast was 1982 but they must mean first live broadcast. I think the ESPN version you have was tape delay because also i remember one of the reasons that weekend that ticket prices were so in demand and so high is that the only live broadcast was to folks back in L.A. I wish i could find the LSU broadcast of the game even if it is just audio because the USC broadcast doesn't begin to capture the noise level (they must have been in a soundproof booth)

someone posted the entire game earlier in this thread and i posted highlights but the quality is not great and it doesn't capture the noise level

Turnovers kept the Tigers in that game, but overall the defense ....and crowd helped to keep SC off balance. What I could not understand is why Cholly Mac abandoned the three wide outs. The few times he used thst formation, good things happened.
I knew a lawyer who was on that SC team as a reserve LB who said that not only was it loud , he had never seen the team so beat up and worn out after a game. There were a lot of dehydrated kids from California in the visitor's locker room after that game as well.

That afternoon my Peewee Football team played a team from New Orleans in the Superdome...I was 7. And I fumbled the football on my only rushing attempt.
That night we stayed and watched SMU vs Tulane.
All of our dad's had transistor radios while listening to the LSU/USC game.

Jim Simpson did the play by play on ESPN.

So, as far as we know, does the LSU radio broadcast of this game exist in any form? I’d love to hear how loud it was. Guess that was before the days of popping in a cassette to record a radio broadcast, though.

Agreed. My freshman year at LSU. Still the best game I have ever attended at Tiger Stadium.

If they call the O-line movement, the play stops and there neva is a face mask. We got hosed, neva felt worse after a game.
I agree. It was tough after that loss.

Years ago, a guy on here claimed he taped it off the radio, and I think a few people were happy to pay to have a copy, but I dunno what happened on that one.

ESPN did broadcast the game. It was one of the first night games they covered:
We go through this every time the 1979 Southern Cal game was mentioned. ESPN did not start showing live college football games until the 1984 season. From its inception three weeks earlier through the 1983 season ESPN only showed games on a delayed basis later that following week.
The 1979 Southern Cal-LSU game was NOT on live TV.

I have a picture of that but it is too light from the sun angle to post.
It said “Trojans, Pump em and Dump em!”
