If Fred's isn't the "problem", what would you say is?
Poorly run bars that survive off getting high school teenagers blacked out mostly, and those bars being closer to a very run down area of town

Both can be true

The bars are not the problem. Tigerland suffers a common problem of apartment neighborhoods.
Nicer apartments get built, old ones convert to Section 8, neighborhood turns into ghetto.
This ghetto just happens to adjoin a popular bar scene.

What's stopping you from using it for parking right now?

I wish Fred's was spending $2.5 million to tear down buildings and rebuild on Chimes Street instead of Tigerland.

Lsu should buy everything and level it. Leave the bars and Tiger Plaza if it's still decent.
When I lived there in the 90s it was still mostly college kids but TOPS kind of changed the landscape there. Not as many broke college kids needing a $350-400 apartment now.

I wish LSU or someone else would buy out those shitty apartments in Tigerland and do something useful with that property.

All I know is the last thing the northgate needs is another chain/national franchise. Keep that place original like the rest of the state!

Agreed

The north gate area needs to be cleaned up swiftly. It makes the most sense for a strip of college bars due to proximity to campus.
Then why do bars routinely fail in that area? There’s two empty ones right on chimes street and a third that’s turned over like 5 times in the last 10 years.
The old Serranos turns over all the time too as does the old Louies.
Tigerland Bars plus Bogies have been fairly consistent. Mike’s and the House are the new kids on that block and both have been there 10 years at this point.

I have watched chimes street for years...
My thoughts are when drinking age went from 18 to 21 they lost all the freshmen and sophomore drinkers... And by the time you are legal age many students have moved off campus and closer to the other popular bar options... and to come to chimes makes them a target for dui and. Parking shortage.. rent is very high on chimes and they have a little monopoly which is why the high turnover...
Chimes street was actually going through a very positive re vitalization with the two new apartment remodels.and new chicken and street tacos places along with other things...
Hopefully covid has not killed it
They need to be able to survive on food first and then drinks to catch the lunch crowd... same thing with the shops all around cvs...
When I was there chimes Street was great place to do day drinking....night band drinking... the bigger night ( or Friday happy hour)bar scene was where cvs (Sorta) is now and down highland a few blocks where all the razor wire is now...
You could start day drinking on chimes and close out the bars down highland at 1:00 and grab a burritos at pedros on the way home..
I love chimes street though!
FYI newks is not coming back and closed ... that would be a great bar..food place for someone.

My goodness. People wanna tear down national monuments and statues. Now Tigerland.
Where does it end?

Tigerland is a shithole because it’s all Section 8 housing. South of campus saw a boom in complex development and at some point landlords needed to find a way to get people in the buildings.

How many of these 18-21 year olds were actually paying attention to guidelines over the past 4 months? Of course there would be a spike when things open and most are getting tested for the first time.

Well, I mean, this is the Tiger Rant, so I expect our panel of legal experts to weigh in just as the Rant epidemiologists have done on COVID-19 recently. Still waiting for our TR Team Nobel Prize.
