I know nothing about these types of traps, but I know my dad wants one that he can drop off a pier on the river and I'd like to get him one for Father's Day. I'm not sure if there are many differences in types, brands, sizes. Can anyone recommend something?

These are a couple I was looking at:

Not sure on your location, but the bait shop on the corner of Walker South and HWY 16 has hoop nets.

I'm not close to where my dad lives so I will have to order it and have it shipped. Thanks though.

Go fiberglass. Pray there’s no gators around.

Unfortunately there are gators in the river every so often.

Call Nets and More in Jonesville LA. They can tell you what you want and ship it to your dad.

If he's just looking for a hoop net to catch Catfish, he can get a simple fiberglass one. He'll also need a case of power bait cheese bait.

If they’re in the right location you don’t need bait. I still see a lot use stink cheese and other baits.

It's basically two different styles of hoop net. If you're trying to catch perch, you're basically using a net with wings or leads that will steer the fish into the net as they travel down a ditch or along a bank or something.

But if you're fishing for catfish you don't need the leads. You can bait the nets and attract them that way.

Cottonseed cake has gotten ridiculously expensive. Works the best though.

OP, how old is your dad, area fishing? See if you can’t find an 8’ net that will be easy for him to handle by himself.

ETA: If you do want to buy him some cottonseed cake, call some feed stores in your area. Power bait cheese works great and is much more practical these days but cottonseed cake is tremendous. See if you can’t find a little

Dad is pretty old so anything sort of heavy is out of the question. Thanks so much for the advice though.

Does anyone know a place in south Louisiana they had these traps. I love the recommended store but shipping is pretty pricey.

What river / where does your Dad live?
Asking because if it’s False River there is a place locally that sells similar. I’ll go get one and deliver it for you.

He’s not near you. I appreciate the offer but I’d rather not share due to privacy. I’ll check around on FB marketplace. Thanks.

Not sure if Louisiana Net and Twine is still open in Lafayette but I’m sure they’d have them if so. Located off Cameron near Ambassador. Believe they’re only open a half day on Thursday and closed on Fridays though.
