The mill partially closing was not great but I think 30 years ago that would have hurt a lot worse. Our local economy has "diversified" as they say. We still haven't seen the full effects of that yet due to property tax assessments not being done right after closure.

I'll hold off on my opinion to the Q in the op. I am a Zachary native and biased. My plan is for my kids to graduate from ZHS.

Final note: the Z kids going to MPSA schools sometimes go to play sports. Either because they couldn't make the team here or they weren't the star. I have mixed feelings about that but hey - you won't get another trip though HS - so I understand. Some do not stay in district due to demographics which I think is a shame.
