Bowie was one of those exceptionally rare artists who never have to sell out, because they can be as weird and offputting as they want and the public will still eat it up. Bowie never went mainstream. Mainstream went Bowie.

That's the year he saw an unsigned band called Roxy Music and stole the wardrobe of their lead singer Bryan Ferry. Bowie decided he would dress like Bryan Ferry and write songs like Lou Reed. Is theft selling out?
