He’s trying to get people to come to the old man’s defense first. Have the media call him crazy and mean. Then the truth comes out and he can say I told you so.

That's what I'm guessing
But if by some odd chance he's speculating it's going to look really bad
Hopefully he is already privy to the facts and he is right
