Don’t move to Oklahoma. That place is a shite hole and boring.

Go join the union and become elevator mechanic. Get through first two yrs and you will be set. A lot of those guys make more than dentists
Man, that's two wildly divergent careers to compare.

Do it. Get experience for 1-2 years and leave if you hate it

62 year old retired pete eng /geologist/geophysicist here
no shortage of layoffs throughout my career...
i was laid off twice and got lucky both times and landed a better job with higher salary within a few weeks and pocketed the severance.....some friends stayed and a lot more made complete career changes...
seriously!!! i have seen a lot of layoffs....the industry has changed a lot...from conventional oil to resource plays to today...
if it is decent economically make the change!!!
diversify your skill set
you can always come back if industry gets better
go to calif... live lightly and do not set roots for at least a year while you check things out
then stay...or go to austin
take advantage of your mobility and age now and experiment...
good luck and what ever you decide do not look back and second guess....
btw many of those guys became VP with financial companies ,rich from sales, owners of high end car dealerships, management consultants,doctors........

You can survive on $247 dollars a week? $222 after taxes?

If moving to california you need to learn how to dress or you won't get any pussy. No more sports t-shirts, blue jeans, and mesh nike shoes. That shite may fly in Louisiana with women who wear Nike shite, but not there.
Get some black pants, cuff them at the ankles, cool socks, and old school off white reeboks or vans. Any t shirt without a brand name will do. Dont listen to country music. Mac Demarco, Tame impala, and all the basic indie stuff will be a good start. Good luck son. And never say "liberalism is uh mental disorder" when in the presence of some fine trim, no matter how bad you want to.

I pushed my mortgage back a few months and with the extra $600 a week it's enough for me to stay afloat.
I appreciate all the responses and I think I'm leaning to taking the job in Cali and just see what happens and rent out my home for something to fall back on. I really wouldn't mind a new adventure right now anyway.

yes its going down in a hurry but they have 200 rigs there. Once it picks back up if he wanted there would be plenty of jobs out there. Might have to wait awhile for it to pick back up 6-12 months but West Texas is where the oilfield is

wow.
That's for people who lost their jobs due to the Virus, not because their industry faltered on its own.
I bet you vote republican and rail against welfare too.
You cheat.

I don't think it's too difficult to see how this pandemic affected the oil industry. I usually pay the most in taxes wherever I've worked because I'm single with no kids and I make good money. The only money I've ever received from the government outside of a tax return was my paycheck when I served in the military. Have a nice day.
edit: I also had a full time job when I was 14 and I've been working ever since. This is the longest I've ever gone without a job.

Same here. I lived in Allegheny county PA for 5 years. I'm gonna get what's mine. I will enjoy the summer and when I find something I like I will pursue it. But I'm getting the max from texas which is more than double that of LA. It will pay all my Bills and leave some left over for fun. All I have is electric, cable, food gas and cell phone. I live a simple life.

You are single. 130K is a good bit for a single guy. Go to Cali and enjoy the weather and women.
