I had 100% completion on the first RDR, so I obviously like the genre, but that was also about 10 years ago when I had more free time.

Now with more limited gaming time available, is RDR2 still worth picking up, or is it too much of a grind, etc. to be enjoyable in shorter bursts?

short sessions

A "short session" in this game means you were able to check out the inventory in your horse's saddle bag.

Maybe.

Haha, that's what I was afraid of.

I want to play it, but I don't want to get sucked in if I can't really enjoy it.

I would definitely recommend playing in longer sessions, but you don’t really have to grind and you can also just play through the main story if you so desire.

I've tried multiple times to get into this game, and this is the best example of why it hasn't happened.

I do this mission, get into a shootout to rescue someone, have to split up and leave the area to avoid bounty hunters on our tails. All fun. Look at my map and the closest mission I have is still a good ride, so I take off to the location (collecting a debt for someone in my camp). I get there and it won't let me go into the house because of my wanted level or something. Game says "come back later". I look on my map and see that 2 of the bounty hunters are close by and headed my way. So I take cover, ambush, and take them out. Figured that was enough, go to the house, same message, "come back later".

Seriously...no time for this.

I've seen where you can unlock fast travel. Does that make it any better, or is it still too much?

Fast travel load times are pretty long and you can only travel like to towns or certain landmarks.

Riding across the map is actually one of my favorite things in the game. You will miss a good bit of random encounters if you elect to not do it.

I just googled it, and if you pick up the map in Arthur's tent, you unlock fast travel. Interesting.

RDR2 is definitely one of those games you can get sucked into and play for very long periods of time without realizing it, much like old school WoW was.

Much like old school WoW, there's no clear starting and stopping points, it always feels like you're in the middle of something, so it's difficult to find a stopping point. There's always one more thing to do, repeat x1000.

No.

I guess at certain points you can do some side missions and other shite that are near each other. But the beginning is a slog and it takes time to upgrade the fast travel, which only helps a little since you can only travel from camp and not back to it.

well this is an easy one. You either just let them kill you or you go pay your bounty off at a post office.

Never fast traveled once in this game. Loved riding everywhere and getting distracted by whatever I could find. I thought the riding and exploring is what made it great.

Agreed. The exploration is really great once the game opens up in Chapter 2. It's a slog to get those first 2-3 hours knocked out but once you do it's worth it.
