Anyone else feel like masonry sand is clean but takes forever to blend into centipede? It also doesn’t have any nutrients. Is there any better top dressing on them north shore to buy?

Anything takes long to blend with centipede, it grows slow. You can do a top dress mix. I believe most nurseries sell something of that nature.

I use playground sand and have really not had that issue. Typically within a month, the grass covers it, but im not usually filling large holes. Mostly washouts or ruts.

There's a brand of potting soil that's heavy, Sandy and black. Perhaps you can lay a thin layer of that over your masonry sand and it'll be less noticeable with faster growing.

Ive had success filling centipede problem areas with Scotts Lawn Soil from HD but it is expensive as hell.

I did this too...wish there was a better option on the northshore.

On another note, if you want to make your life about 1000 times easier when it comes to top dressing, buy this immediately.

Youll thank me.

edit: buy here

Good advice. I have one. I let all my neighbors use it and they love it too

How short does the grass have to be to use it effectively?

You can do it at many different heights, but if your lawn has taller blades the top dressing will fall down into a smaller sqft area rather than spreading it out wide and even. Think burber carpet spreading vs shag carpet spreading

I was thinking about getting some garden soil and do a 50/50 mix with river silt. I’ve heard of the torpedograss concern with river silt but I’ve never had it happen to me

There’s plenty of options on the northshore. I just had 15 yards of mason sand delivered today from Accardos, but you could get top soil, compost, peat moss, whatever you want. Don’t buy that overpriced Scott’s shite.

Edit: the only reason to top dress your lawn with mason sand is to try to get it as level as possible usually to mow low with a reel mower. If you just want to get some nutrients back into your soil there are better options.

Well I want both nutrients and leveling accomplished. I guess I’m going to fall in line with masonry sand like everyone else has recommended

15 yards of sand??? Dang, that's a lot of sand. That has to be heavy as hell too! How big of a yard are you trying to level?
