Fresh live bait....handled as little as possible....best caught on a sabiki...and unhooked with a de-hooker right in the bait tank. And hard bottom....can't miss
Sabiki is Japanese for "I can't throw a cast net" but baits caught on a sabiki are far better in my opinion, especially in a good bait tank and not manhandled when taken off the hook. Plus its damned fun.

My Uncle Runs a dock.... he said they going to have a season but not many sheds will be opening. A lot of product left over frozen from last year that they cant move. He explained how it works but I was kinda buzzin.

Amberjack will open in Federal waters May 1st and last until the remaining quota from last year runs out or May 31st, whichever happens first.

What’s a good rod and reel set up for a beginner
Specifically for snapper

Any Penn rod & reel combo from places like Academy, Bass Pro, Cabelas is fine.
Penn Senator
Penn Senator is the classic. I've had 2 for over 6 years no issues.
I also have a couple of Penn Squalls.
I bought them all during Academy's 25% of rod/reel combos sales (which run at least a few times a year)
Have them string on 30 or 40 lb test mono for free while you are there.
There are more expensive reels (Avet), but not necessary for snapper.

AJ will start May 1. The snapper start was delayed since the commission meeting in March or April was canceled due to Covid. The next meeting is on May 7th and it will set the start and "end" dates.

I've used a Penn 309 on a True Temper green rod for years without any problems and it does fine.
My uncle sent me an Ambassador 7000 and I've been eyeing that one for a new rig, reckon how it would work?

Any reason snapper season would not open this year? I mean, the snapper don't have the wu-flu.
Following along here as well, as I too know not-sh&t about catching them but hear it's pretty easy, using variety of baits. Good discussion on a nasty, windy day outside, carry on baws.

For your first trip out I'd bring an experienced friend with you to teach you all ins and outs of not only snapper fishing, but how to operate your specific boat around a rig/platform/other boats also fishing the same rig/etc

The main thing is have someone who knows when it's time to get the frick. if you havent spent any time offshore it can get dangerous for a bay boat fast

Snapper are super easy to catch. Get some bait, damn near anything will work. Squid, pogies, mullet, crabs, Bonita, white trout, it all works. Red snapper will be found in waters from 60’ all the way out to the continental shelf. Pick a rig, pull up to it, drop baits to the bottom, reel up a few cranks and wait. You will start to feel them picking at the bait. You should be using a circle hook so when one has it point the rod down towards the fish and start reeling not too fast. As the line becomes tight keep reeling and lift the rod tip up. Once he is on there fight him like normal. If no bites near the bottom reel up a few cranks. Sometimes the bigger fish are up a ways in the rig. Sometimes up current or down current or you just have to bounce around from rig to rig until you find them. There you go, snapper fishing 101
