We've become slaves to big data

Am I wrong?
Sports, medicine, sales, marketing, etc
Everything is done based off of analytics and data

Is more information with which to make decisions a bad thing?

Data is a tool. Just have to keep everything in perspective. Garbage in = garbage out.

It's only going to get worse.

People are ilnumerat, loving big numbers, percentages, stats, etc., so yes in a way.
Yes, but that doesn't mean it's right. Its only variables that the person puts in. I could do the same data using different variables and get different outcomes.

I work at Salesforce and it’s a good thing we are going off big data.

Data can be manipulated to show a desired effect and in the case of models lots of the data points are inputted using assumptions and estimates.

When we have more information at hand to make decisions for ourselves, absolutely not.
When others have so much information to the point that they make our decisions for us, absolutely.

Do you only make decisions based off of the data?

I would suggest there are instances where it can be crippling.

Data = information.
You want to make decisions based on what? The wild hair up your arse?

Is it accurate information?
You ever studied military intelligence?
Bad information can result in significant losses.

Data isn't always good. When running a regression you are taking a data set from someone else then running it on an open source program

Lol. So someone above you gives you objectives. Got it.

Oh wait, March 11th, 2020.

Yes, we’re “slaves” to better information.

Decisions about what?
Be specific.

Information is always good to have...it's like a gun though. Both are inanimate items ...nothing with out a user and how its used is the key. I think that the bigger issue is the quantity of "data scientist" and the assumption that the vast quantity of data has somehow made statistics as facts. The first point...there are a myriad of really good analytics programs out there for $499 you can get a certificate in "data science" well, like the ERA going up when baseball expands ....there is dilution in pitching...same thing in data science. And then there is the use of the word "science" . which is more applicable as post event analysis of data, but we have come to accept, wrongly, that predictive analytics is nigh near...as much a fact as Boyles law...or certainty as the speed of light. Predictive analytics should be in tee room ...how many widgets will be sold next year..there needs to be starting point. But even the phds that work on sales projections still have to make adjustments to their models
What would the country/ media response be if the models would have initially stated 60k deaths...instead of 2.2 or some number?
What amazed me was Cuomo stating "you are entitled to your opinion but notv your own facts" ...well sorry governor, the facts are actually very few. As in ...two. Fact 1) there is a virus called Covid 19. And 2) there are people that would be alive today if not for the virus. How many that will ultimately be ...is an assumption. How many were going to die in 3 months? Well there is data to suggest that...but that is an assumption as well. Statistics that are "facts" are...Stan Musial hadb the same number hits at home and the road...that's a fact
