If so how long will that last?

I've been doing that for years. I hope the rest of the country will join me now that they have had a very public object lesson on why outsourcing production to the third world is bad.

I am 100% for higher tariffs, and moving industry back to the USA.

We run an online boutique, and try to list products made in America whenever we can.

The first problem is finding textiles made here.
The second problem is getting customers to swallow the more expensive price.

Many of our customers message us asking where the products are made, and we put on ever product page if it is imported or made in the USA.

A lot of them say they want made in America, but when we look at the numbers, they only buy when it's Made in China's price. So we sell Chinese a lot. Most people won't put their money where their mouth is.

If there was a concerted effort to educate Americans on this matter I think you would see a difference...a big one.

Let it get out that Yeti manufactures 100% of their stuff in China right now and see how the public responds. Pure greed is the only reason why we do ANY business over there.

In addition to "made in the USA", perhaps its time for "Caution: This Product Was Made In China" labeling...mandated by federal law, if need be.

Textiles. I'm not giving any more detail because I don't want my politics connected with my store.

I have always made a fair effort not to and IMO did a pretty good job. It's impossible no to, even mich of what's assembled here is built with chinese parts. Going forward I will be militant about it.

I have begun to check many of our possessions. Staggering revelation to be honest. Columbia fleece jackets? Sketchers? Dammit!

Reformation shall ensue.

This.

Unfortunately, American-made products are just hard to find. Pretty sad since we live in America. For many items there are no American-made options at all.

I would say about 90% of the items I own are either German, Japanese, American or Indian(dots, obviously)

I have a few chinese-made items but frick China. I will make an even greater effort now to reduce that number to zero. I was already damn near it solely for the reason that China makes crap products.

Greed of the customers, mostly. Like I said, if the Made In America tag actually generated any additional business, I'd go 100% MIA. But it doesn't. Everyone says they want Made in America, but goes right to the cheap stuff when crunch time hits.

I'll give you an example: one of our headline products was made in china for $32 cost, shipping included. They sell on my and my competitors' sites for around $69.99.

I sell the Made in America version. It's better quality, has more features, and the shipping time is 5 days instead of 15. The problem is it's $55.

I still have to list it for $69.99 because the customer is not comparing like to like, they see product X on competitor.com is selling for $69, and I'm selling for $79, and they go to the competition. I advertized all over the place about the Made in America, no one cared. I dropped the price to the Chinese price, and my customers were back, but with me making barely any margin. So I just don't advertize that product.

You say you want Made in America, but you don't. You want Made in America at Made in China prices, and you'll be willing to swallow your pride when it comes down to it and buy the Chinese version, because you don't want to pay the premium.

The clothes on your back are made in China, almost 100%.

Same with your shoes, wallet, etc.

Harbor Freight backlash....

What's funny about that place is the only reason I own anything from them is because they sell items that no other local store sells. A lot of specialty tools. They probably don't even realize that I wouldn't mind paying twice as much as they normally charge if they would carry those same tools in American, European or Japanese builds.

We already avoid Made in China wherever we can. Unfortunately Amazon and the like often don't provide country of origin info. So online ordering can be a crap shoot unless you do your research.

My wife was born in Thailand, and she can't stand the Chinese. She's been the leader of the charge on avoiding Made in China.

We even did a whole advertising campaign over bringing our big popular product back to the USA. No one cared enough to buy at the higher price

A fricking infuriates me to no end that people are so cheap. Yet, so fricking stupid with their money.

They would rather buy cheap Chinese product 10X in their lifetime at $50 per unit than a higher-quality American or European product 1X in their lifetime at $150 per.

Chinese payout = $500

Quality payout = $150

The common American has no concept of ROI
