High school athletics

I know there are more grave issues than high school athletics at hand right now. But, at the same time, I hate it that Spring sports athletes lost their opportunity to compete - especially Seniors. Here in Ga, that includes, baseball, track, tennis, and golf, and probably something else I’m missing. I hope there’s some way for them to start back - maybe go straight to regional and state playoffs bypassing the regular season schedule. Some parents even want the Spring sports to be played this summer.
Anybody think there’s a chance they’ll see the field again this school year?

While this issue doesn't rank high on the scale at the moment, you bring up a good question: If this blows over by the end of May, beginning of June, will there be school this summer or will they wait and just reset in the fall?

If this last then will reset for next year.

Teachers assigned our kids two weeks of lesson plans. They are essentially home schooling. We then have spring break, and, I assume, the kids will get more assignments after that if they are still out of school - and they will be.
So, the academics should be covered here, albeit watered down.
I still hate it for the seniors who were seeing the field for the last time in sports. I hope some kind of bone can be thrown to them. Maybe summer play.

Baseball at the HS level is actually modern. Before 1970 most towns only had summer leagues. So, it shouldn't effect baseball players much.

It is time that these seniors learn to grow up. A great lesson to get them started that life isn’t fair.

I do too. A lot of kids worked hard to excel and participate, and almost all of them will never play at the next level..... tough for it to end like this.

Still do as well as travel ball, but that’s not the same as GHSA (or your states equivalent) sanctioning an actual season in the summer to declare region & state champs. Like some of y’all, I live in an area where bragging rights over the next county’s or city’s high school is important to these kids.
A lot of these kids are down in the dumps. I’d like to see the state high school associations put something in play this summer.

If it blows over by then, it would be a huge morale booster in a LOT of communities.

Yeah, Georgia produces a lot of good baseball players. It used to be that most signed minor league contracts right out of HS instead of going college. Is that still true?

No.
This year is over.
School will be closed until fall.

Exactly this.
How many kids during Katrina lost their entire school year? 1000’s. Lots of seniors in high school lost their entire year at their home school. They had to attend school at another school.
This is real life. It isn’t fair.

Yeah it produces it’s fair share but the better baseball players everywhere usually sign pro instead of college. That kind of makes college baseball recruiting tricky IMO

So by all means lets make sure it happens the COVID kids as well since it happened to those in Katrina. Apples and oranges BTW.
ETA: I assure you they will have plenty of bumps and bruises along the way to teach them life isn’t fair. Some already have.
We are taking about any way to make it happen for these teenagers if possible.

This might have been dangerous from a liability, depending on exactly what the school system did, and especially as it relates to SPED. Federal law requires that every student have equal access to educational opportunities. If the assignments involved anything online, the school district would have to take whatever steps necessary to make sure each child has access to the internet. One state instructed schools that this might include actually bringing those kids to school and seating them in computer labs a safe distance from other students.
If your school system had a plan that they put into place that would have satisfied federal law, great. If this was just a few teachers flying by the seat of their pants to make themselves look good, that's not good.
One superintendent of a large county here in Tennessee emailed all teachers explicitly telling them not to send out anything online yet and to wait for guidance from the county's instructional coordinators.

They will get over it or they will have much bigger problems.

Here in Tennessee we could be back in school by April 15, and if we are, then yes, we can get a modified spring sports schedule in.

It was all paper - not online

Just because it feels like a good thread to bitch about this in...
My youngest son is set to graduate in May and head to BASIC in June. Already wondering how bad this time off is going to screw that up.
Schools set to open back up on April 6, but I have my doubts already. Myself, I was about two weeks from taking a State certification test and now my evening classes are also canceled until the 6th**.

That’s what I’d like to see. Our county was one of the last to adjourn in our area so I hope we’ll be one of the first to suck it up and start back - if that is still a local option vs State.
