Cheesecake Factory vs Hard Rock Cafe
When CF opened at Lakeside some of my friends from Delgado were exceedingly excited. While helping one of them produce a movie for his film class, he decided to thank me by taking me here. I was underwhelmed. It wasn't bad, but I think the restaurant believes the public will ignore the average quality for excessive quantity. There were at least three servings on my plate of salmon. The flavor was okay, but I thought with every bite, "We could be eating Shogun's salmon terriyaki for a fraction of this price and it is a far superior product." Restaurants like Cheesecake Factory, which encourage overeating by serving mammoth sized dishes are a big part of the obesity epidemic in America. Hard Rock Cafe, on the other hand, has one of the best hamburgers of any restaurant. It rarely gets mentioned as one of the top 10 burgers in New Orleans, even I forget it often. But it has for my entire life always had a burger that pushes for inclusion in the top 10. A cheeseburger and chocolate milkshake at Hard Rock is one of the best combos of any chain restaurant in any city. While the t-shirts are no longer en vogue, the hamburgers and shakes are classics that are as good today as in the 90s. Hard Rock Cafe

Denny's vs 99
Denny's makes a passable breakfast. The Grandslam is nice, and Waffle House copied it. 99 is a terrible name and shouldn't be in this competition. Denny's

Benihanna vs Macaroni Grill
Benihanna had a location in the French Quarter in the mid1980s. I have spoken with several chefs at Shogun who worked there before Ms. Peggy hired them to work her hibachi tables. I'm sure Benihanna is better than Macaroni Grill. The last time I went to Macaroni Grill was on vacation and it was terrible. Even the free bread tasted blank. It's no wonder the company will likely no survive this year.

This has nothing to do with the competition, but I just had a momentary spiritual or nous outer body experience. I began to imagine a world where each of us is quarantined in our houses, never allowed to leave our own properties. The military delivers our food. Restaurants do not exist. And we gather on this board to retell our stories of restaurant experiences. What a strange hallucination that was. Okay, I'm back to this world. Benihanna

Logan's Roadhouse vs Pluckers
Logan's is the one that, like OHenry or OBriens or OMallory's or whatever O restaurant was on StC and Carrollton, encourages peanut shell discarding on the floor, right? Another boring chain, but when you measure it against its competition, Pluckers, I guess I have no recourse except to advance it. Logan's Roadhouse

Cracker Barrel vs Famous Dave's
This isn't just. Cracker Barrel a 6 seed? 99.9% of diners are going to choose Cracker Barrel. Cracker Barrel

Round Table Pizza vs Texas Roadhouse
I've never heard of Round Table Pizza. Why include it but not other pizza chains like Pizza Inn or Pizza Hut or Godfather's or Domino's? Each of these has locations that have dine in options. Texas Roadhouse serves an acceptable steak. I'd even choose it over Outback now. Texas Roadhouse

BJ's vs Primanti Brothers
Another duo of anonymity. The selection committee, at this point, has to be trolling us in Louisiana. Has anyone heard of this junk? I pity such people knowing so many chain restaurants. Had they grown up in a city of culture like New Orleans, they wouldn't be wasting our time with these esoteric selections. Primanti's wins based on its name alone. Primanti Brothers

Outback vs Tropical Rainforest
Outback of the 90s was undisputed champion of moderately priced dine-in chain restaurants. Cheese fries with bacon and ranch, five loaves of pumpernickle bread with butter, a Caesar salad, an large Outback sirloin, and a loaded baked potato was one of my secret treats Uncle would sneak me on trips to Lakeside for Christmas gifts. When Adler's opened in Lakeside, we found the selection for Mother's gifts at that location better than the one on Canal. Now only the Canal location is open. Anyway, the quality of Outback has greatly declined in the last decade. I may have tried Tropical Rainforest once. If I did, I don't remember it. Outback

The rest of the brackets will move a little more quickly as I now must prepare breakfast for Mother and a friend, both whom are quarantined.

Bottom Left Bracket:
Bubba Gump vs Carrabbas
Neither deserves to advance, but sometimes that's how the brackets fall.

Bucco De Pepsi vs Disqualified
Blame this one on the selection committee

Maggiano's
vs Melting Pot
Both deserve advancing to the Sweet 16

Cheddar's vs Olive Garden
Cheddar's is to Olive Garden as Gonzaga is to Indiana.

Top Left Bracket:

Luby's vs Joe's Crab Shack
Joe's wins this on nostalgia alone

Yard House vs California Pizza Kitchen

Flemings vs Red Lobster

Pappadeaux vs Golden Corral
The easiest of all round of 32 matchups.

Bottom Right Bracket:

Texas Roadhouse vs Johnny Carino's

Bonefish Grill vs Apples Bees

O'Charley's vs Sizzler

Chevy's Fresh Tex Mex vs Waffle House
An OT nailbiter.

Top Right Bracket

Hard Rock Cafe vs Denny's

Benihanna's vs Logan's
The only Japanese restaurant in the list, and the only remaining Asian restaurant destroyed Logan's. The selection committee had a decidedly anti-Asian and Tex Mex mix of restaurants. I am calling for a Congressional investigation into the committee.

Cracker Barrel vs Texas Roadhouse

Primanti Brothers vs Outback

THE SWEET 16

Carrabbas vs Bucks di Peppi
Carrabbas gifted with the easiest path to the Elite 8 in history.

Maggiano's vs Cheddar's
In a matchup of Italian vs traditional Southern food, Italy wins overwhelmingly. Please do not let my Grandparents know I did this.

Joe's Crab Shack vs California Pizza Kitchen
Ultimately, the vistas from Joe's could not overcome that perfect thin crust at CPK.

Red Lobster vs Golden Corral
Have you ever tried GC's bread pudding? It's an NBA Jam free throw line 360 slam dunk.

Texas Roadhouse vs Apples Bees
A UNC-Duke matchup. Apples Bees surprised even me with this outcome.

Sizzler vs Waffle House
This was a hot one. Sizzler had the superior starting five, but Waffle House had such a deep bench. The depth and consistency of that bench won Waffle House a spot in the 8.

Hard Rock Cafe vs Benihanna
Hard Rock keeps pounding that rock. The restaurant's employees have started to wear No Fear tshirts to remind everyone of the glory days of the 90s.

Cracker Barrel vs Outback
A close game between obese 65 year olds making the rounds in their oversized RVs which they can hardly control and obese 50 year old suburbanites. Ultimately, steak is better than eggs and pumpernickle bread better than biscuits and cornbread.

THE ELITE EIGHT

Carrabba's vs Maggiano's
Final score: 125 to 15. Maggiano's humiliates Carrabba's.

California Pizza Kitchen vs Golden Corral
The weight of GC's unlimited and unrivaled buffet bar was just too much for the limited CPK menu.

Apples Bees vs Waffle House
Waffle House ends the dream season of traditional power Apples Bees. I doubt we see Apples Bees make a run like this again in the near future.

Hard Rock Cafe vs Outback
Love All, Serve All vs No Rules, Just Right. These two powerhouses shared 7 national chain restaurant titles in the 1990s. Both have since fallen on hard times. Ultimately, Outback's Caesar stole Hard Rock's last possession and sealed the game.

FINAL FOUR

Maggiano's vs Golden Corral
Golden Corral came in with quality and quantity. Maggiano's quality was just that much better. A best of seven series might go to Golden Corral, but this is March Madness.

Waffle House vs Outback
Waffle House has the tournament's best depth and its players play through pain, injury, and disaster. It remains to be seen how it will deal with quarantine, but ultimately, Outback didn't have a chance against this growing Goliath.

TulaneLSU's Chain Championship

Maggiano's vs Waffle House

A true battle for the ages. Beautiful opera music, red checkered table cloths with white paper on top, dim and warmly lit Maggiano's. On the other bench is bright fluorescent lighting with the loud clank of ceramic dishes interrupted by the town talk or 70s music from the jukebox. Italian classics vs diner classics. It was a close one for me, but at the last second, Walker Percy was right: consistency in serving good food around the salt of the Earth makes it a favorite. And this year's TulaneLSU's Chain Champion.

Thank you for reading, dear friends.

TulaneLSU's Chain Championship

Maggiano's vs Waffle House

I can go with this.
But my final 4 would be Maggiano's, Waffle House, Cracker Barrel, Pappadeaux (Pappasitos if it had been there instead).

And the greatest of these is love.

Maggianos
Pappadeaux
Bonefish Grill
Cheesecake Factory

That’s a nice Final Four in my opinion and could enjoy a meal any any of them. The poster that said Pappasitos however was correct in the one to rule them all. Kind of like king of the dipshits.
