Losartan and HydroxyChloroquine are being checked for China-virus cure/treatment.

Most here have heard about Hydroxychrloroquine being used to fight China-Virus.

Some may not have heard that trials using the blood pressure medicine of Losartan is also being done.

quote:

Quote:
Researchers say Losartan, an enzyme receptor, could prevent the virus from binding to host cells in the victim's body, possibly preventing further or future infections. Hydroxychloroquine, used to treat malaria in many countries, could possibly suppress the proteins that cause deadly inflammation in victims, according to Reuters.

A 1,500-patient trial began this week testing the use of hydroxychloroquine, according to the news service, while two trials testing the use of losartin are reportedly ongoing.

So...if we already take Losartan, we are good to go?

Maybe. Did the trials test only Losartan, or also with the variant including HCTZ?

And a follow-up: if Losartan works, what about Valsartan? (I take the latter)

Kinda the same thing here... I actually take Telmisartan. They all do the exact same thing, though.

I thought they said ACEs and ARBs were bad to take with Corona?

Losartan is actually free if you have good insurance.

Bad news: There was a bunch contaminated last year because the Chinese thought it was smart to make rocket fuel in the same factory they make prescription medicine and it was one of those affected. There was actually a shortage for a while last year.

Bad timing...

(Plus - yet another thing they only/mainly make in China...)

There was concern about ACE inhibitors. I didn't see anything about ARBs, but I could have missed it.

(ETA: Extra irony, I can't take "Ace" inhibitors.)

Just dug into that question as it is interesting. There are some researches suggesting the opposite.

Are patients taking ACEi and ARBS more likely to coctract virus?

quote:

We suggest that patients with cardiac diseases, hypertension, or diabetes, who are treated with ACE2-increasing drugs, are at higher risk for severe COVID-19 infection and, therefore, should be monitored for ACE2-modulating medications, such as ACE inhibitors or ARBs. Based on a PubMed search on Feb 28, 2020, we did not find any evidence to suggest that antihypertensive calcium channel blockers increased ACE2 expression or activity, therefore these could be a suitable alternative treatment in these patients.

The theory is: if you take these meds, your body responds by making more ACE2. This would create more sites for possible attachments. If you had not previously taken these meds you would have normal receptor population and they may work to reduce risk.

PLEASE BEAR IN MIND: This is all supposition and the authors are trying to spark research to validate or disprove. I did not share this to cause undue concern, but rather suggest a wait and see approach.

That may occur for people who are chronically on it. But, in the short term in a person who has never taken it, it would block the receptors and the virus attachment.

A lot of the "sartans" went through that. Mine was OK though, apparently Aurobindo in Hyberabad (India) has good quality control. (Though this year my pharmacy switched suppliers to Mylan)

Ya don't say...

Actually, that's why my doc switched me from Losartan to Telmisartan.

In MY opinion, yes. I would never suggest changing prescribed courses of medicine. It would also ensure you have them in case crazy people create a bogus shortage.

I am a clinical pharmacist working in a hospital. I find the topic fascinating. If you are on good terms with your doc, by all means discuss it with him/her. Again this is all theoretical at this point. The benefits of ARBs (ending in -sartan) have well documented benefits for high BP, heart failure, and kidney disease (diabetics).

Why are so many on here on Losartan?

I know a few folks on it but they're either very old or fatties that have BP issues.
