This article explains what I was asking about data lag, but focuses on death reporting. It seems to document and verify what many of us have suspected. Daily death reporting does not tell the whole story, and can easily be misrepresented by an uniformed or disingenuous media.

The COVID tracking project just did a comparison of both methods and determined the curves are basically the same and presenting by day reported is not materially different than using day of death.
