That's exactly what Mainieri does, which is what he's saying.

But, I'll say winning a championship a couple of months ago gives you the leeway to do things like this compared to winning one 10+ years ago and not having as much recent success in the postseason and doing this.

The difference is Mainieri hires ex players as his primary assistants.

O is hiring them as analysts, which means they do as much or as little as O wants. It would be equivalent if O was hiring Bennie Logan as defensive coordinator

There is a difference in hiring coaches and analysts.
