I’m fascinated by the old line Mardi Gras krewes and them keeping 100+ year old traditions alive. I was reading the ball thread and there seems to be some implication that there’s crossover between the krewes and even those that have been king of both. Is this true? I figured they were totally separate entities that only joined for their meeting of the courts.

Side question, how long have they been doing the meeting of the court?

Depends on which bylaw. But typically whoever offers the biggest purse.

I also wonder why they go to basic arse hotels like the Sheraton and the Marriott instead of more traditional New Orleans staples like hotel monteleone and the Roosevelt. Guess those don’t have the space?

They used to use the municipal auditorium and drop the curtain between the two balls at midnight.

Why did that stop? I’d always heard about the curtain thing but thought I must have been mistaken when I saw they were in separate hotels.

What? Looks fine on google maps. With the money between those two krewes you think they could have it restored.

They prefer to keep their money.

Yes, some folks are members of both ...the year my wife made her debut one member of both had twin daughters as Queen of Rex and Comus. I don't see that as enjoyable because of the logistics.

Why do they allow that though. And do you just skip one ball and go to the other? I’m an outsider but this is all fascinating. Just seems like you’d really only be a member of one krewe.

It’s more like a country club than a fraternity.

People who are members of multiple country clubs are actually looked favorable upon. Especially when we're talking about the truly elite clubs in the US/Europe.

The mythology around Rex and Comus cracks me up. As if that many of the world’s elite somehow all congregate in Louisiana

Most of them have the same LSU degree you have baw

Some of the balls are in a tent in the parking lot of New Orleans Country Club. Some are in the Orpheum.

Not every member of the krewe has a part in the ball every year.

Not every member even attends the balls.

Unless you are king or a Duke or some type of royalty, you really aren't gonna be missed.

The inside is trashed. I am pretty sure the city is still in a fight with FEMA over funds owed to repair it.

My wife's family is in both. Go to Rex for 3 hrs at the Sheraton then cross over to the Comus event for their bit.

Latoya's using FEMA money to turn it into the new city hall. No more wrestling, no more circuses, no more balls.
