ESPN ready to spend ‘crazy money’ in NFL, Tony Romo bidding war

Romo is contractually allowed to speak with other networks in March if he and CBS have failed to come to an agreement by then, according to sources.
If this happens, ESPN will be CBS’ main competition in what may end up being the most lucrative sports commentator negotiations in TV history.
What is already certain is that Romo will surpass John Madden’s NFL TV analyst record of $8 million per year, according to sources, and will exceed $10 million. Maybe by a lot.
ESPN plans to make a serious run at Romo for “Monday Night Football” as it heads into its NFL rights negotiations in which it hopes to add a second package of games to pair with “Monday Night Football.” Most importantly, it wants to become part of the Super Bowl rotation.
Disney/ABC/ESPN is prepared to spend “crazy money,” according to sources, to land more NFL and their quest will begin with going hard after Romo.

The idea that Romo could end up making four times as much as he did last year — $12 million per year — is quite plausible. Maybe more.

frick this shite. The super bowl shouldn’t be on cable. Neither should the national championship game. Put that shite on abc.

I think Tony teams well with Jim Nantz. They are the best team right now. I think and I hope CBS ponies up the cash.

Only way they can dream of getting all the money back they are spending on all the contracts.

And turn him loose. Don’t filter him or tell him to tone it down like CBS did. If they can parlay this into him doing a “The Details” like show on ESPN+ where he breaks down the tell of the tape of a MNF game on Wednesday, I’m all in for it.

I would love this as well.
After ESPN did the multi-channel broadcast last year for the Wild Card in baseball focused on analytics it shows they finally realize that some of their viewers don’t need to be spoken to as if they know nothing about the sport they are watching.
More content and personalities that are willing break plays/stats down without explaining every other term or statistic would be fantastic.

Yeah one of the worst things about sports leagues chasing female consumers is the dumbing down of everything to a Little League level.
That’s one of the biggest things I love about the XFL. You can hear the play calls and see it happen. The former players will tell you what should happen for each team on a play and when it does/doesn’t work they can tell exactly why.
Instead we get Phil Simms yapping that they oughta throw it to Star Receiver A here or hand it off to Star RB 1 here but look out for Defensive lineman Blah Blah to try to disrupt the play here.

Even people who don't know everything about a sport fricking hate that shite. My wife always laughs at the stupid "keys to the game" lists that tend to have shite like get out to a lead first, don't turn over the ball, and our favorite of all time don't let opponent score touchdowns. We have seen that last one so many times it's a running joke when I'm watching football. She'll come in and go "Now the key to the game is to score points and don't let the other team score points. If you can get the ball in the endzone you can win."

CBS should be in negotiations with Augusta National to allow Romo to be added to the Masters telecast.
Then again, ESPN covers the first two rounds, so they could also dangle that carrot.
Supposedly Nantz and Romo have become good friends out of the booth. ESPN is offering so much money because it’s going to take a lot to break up the Natnz-Romo team. Romo doesn’t want to leave CBS, but everyone has a price.

lol. I'd just as soon listen with the sound off or listen to Kevin Harlan on the radio call.

If they pay him by the word he'll be richer than Bloomberg.

I will never not laugh at the ridiculousness of ESPN firing a shite load of long time experienced on air and behind the scenes talent b/c they claim they are losing too much money even though they are still by far the most profitable cable network, having their production quality clearly drop to the point that people regularly call it out, and then deciding the way to make everyone forget the decrease in quality is to give insane over the top money to people like Stephen A Smith who blatantly doesn't known much about the sports they have him cover or Tony Romo who while great at calling a game can't make up for the fact that MNF no longer gets the premier NFL match ups.

I bet CBS can hold on to him by putting him with Nantz at the Masters and whatever golf coverage they have.
