I just think that is what practice is for. It isn’t like midweek games will show you anymore than scrimmages
OR......
You put it into place in practice/scrimmages to see if it's something you can be comfortable enough trying out for a game. If it is, you try it out in a game.
Have you watched baseball any other year? This happens EVERY SINGLE SEASON. Now it's some big shocker? Come on.

And we can go round and round on this, I guess I must give the disclaimer that I like PM.
If it was offensive, we knew Hughes has been a minus at the plate, this won’t be different this year.
If it was defense, Hughes didn’t become a bad defender, he just had a bad weekend
If it was about getting guys plate opps I think you get pretty good data at practice

You call that just an observation? You made a ridiculous comment, and I replied to it.

When you make a ridiculous comment, I'll respond. I would love to have a great discussion about baseball, even if we don't agree, but you make a dumb arse statement and it will be met with a smart arse reply.

Ok. Now explain to me how this is any different than what Mainieri has ever done at LSU?
Was that nice enough for you?

You may need to learn to discuss something without getting offensive v
There isn’t even a criticism of coach or player in my post. It is a point of discussion

So explain to me the times we pulled a junior who plus defensive player, that is a .200 hitter, at shortstop and experiment after one series.

You are pretending as if you knew all along that Hughes would be benched, thus there was no reason to even play him. That's just an ignorant comment.
You are pretending as if Mainieri playing with the lineup often is some new concept to LSU baseball. That's also an ignorant comment.

I agree, but he had mental errors, which are bench worthy. Fairly or unfairly, he's saddled with the expectations of being a coach's kid. That means fewer mental errors than the average player and more hustle than the average player.
Without being at the games, I can't assess hustle. But he needs to be the headiest player on the field if he wants to stay on the field.
I do think he showed more confidence at the plate and anecdotally it seemed like he didn't swing and miss as much. But he still has his limitations there because he doesn't hit the ball hard enough to get base hits consistently when he does make decent contact (for him).
It should not be unsaid how good a job he did getting runners across home in game 2.
I'm anti-bashing, and I feel Hughes gets more bashing than he really deserves. I hope this is a pretty objective view of him.

Mainieri usually doesn't have issues at SS. Is it because it's SS that it's a big deal?
You think Mainieri hasn't played around with the lineup at tons of other positions, literally every single season?

What's the mental error? Not covering on the steal?

There was something beyond that as well that I can't remember.
I know the error in game one was bad bounce luck. We may have had guys in the past that could knock it down, but I don't think we had anyone that is getting the out at first on that ball.
ETA: I'm starting to wonder if Hughes was playing tight in the field because he knew he was on a short leash?

I mentioned this earlier, but how can anybody say with any certainty that this was on Hughes?
Beloso wasn't holding. That's a fact. If he was supposed to be, blame falls on him (I don't see him getting any). If he wasn't supposed to be, then they were given the base (you can argue if that was the wrong call or not, but that isn't a Hughes issue) and nobody should have been covering. That puts the fault on Milazzo for throwing the ball.
I also don't remember the exact situation, or who was batting. Do we know for certain it wouldn't have been Doughty who was supposed to cover?
My point is, are we blaming Hughes because his name is Hughes? Or is there other stuff that I don't know about, where it's known that Hughes was at fault?

Given what we know about Milazzo (big arm) and Doughty (still getting accustomed to the speed of defense at this level), it's entirely possible that either Milazzo threw on his own because he saw an opportunity or that Doughty didn't cover when he was supposed to.
ETA: I hesitate to "blame" Milazzo if he just threw it because he thought he could get the guy. He's kind of like a point guard that every other guy on the floor needs to be aware that they could get the ball at anytime. (I don't want to compare him to a guy like Yadi, but that's what it's like with him)

For instance, if you saw Cabrera sit versus Hughes sit, would the reaction be the same. For me the answer is no, I would in no way think Cabrera was even close to coming out of the lineup. Or if someone came in for Beloso right now.

So why is Hughes being charged with the mental error, which warrants a benching? That's what I'm trying to get at. I think it's just a reason to pile on Hughes, so it's being done.
All that being said, I'm really hoping the experiment works and Hughes doesn't have to start another game at SS at LSU again. That would be wonderful. I don't see it being able to happen, but it will be great if it does.

Hughes had an issue on a cutoff throw as well IIRC. I wasn't referring to the throw down when I said that (mental errors). He looked off in the field. And I can say off, because we know he capably played the position his freshman year so we know this performance was uncharacteristic.

Is he pulling him, or experimenting, as he usually does in midweek games?

During midweek games, it has happened plenty.

No. I would think Cabrera is getting a day of rest, or injured. There is no way he's coming out the lineup otherwise. We all know that Hughes doesn't have that type of leash. Nobody on this team has a huge leash right now, except Cabrera, Beloso, Garza, Mathis.

Yeah, there is no denying he had an uncharacteristically bad weekend on defense. On the flip side, he had an uncharacteristically better approach at the plate all weekend.
