It starts as simple as you go out first, then your dog follows after you give command. You go inside first and your dog waits for your command.

Same for eating. He eats when you give him the command. He backs away when you give him the command.

He’s challenging you not because he is a prick but he sees himself as the pack leader. If he is on his or your furniture, attach a leash to him and work on the “off” command. When he does well, praise and reward. When he doesn’t, a gentle nudge on leash will force the action. No need to scold, just off and nudge the leash. Rinse and repeat. And you don’t want to confront with your eyes. It’s a sign of aggression with dogs.

I agreed with everything up to this point. When it's your dog and they are staring holes in you, it's part of the challenge to your authority. Looking away or not meeting their stare in this sort of scenario indicates weakeness to them. In other words, allowing them to stare you down in this situation just feeds their sense of dominance.

Stare them down. Don't look away, don't speak, try not to even blink. The goal is for them to look away first, it's a definitive step in re-establishing that you are the pack leader, not the dog.
