Keep in mind that a single vote in California for the Democratic candidate ultimately contributes to 55 electoral votes toward the 270 threshold for victory, whereas a single vote for say Trump in Louisiana, if Louisiana ends up in the Trump column, would contribute to netting Trump only 8 electoral votes toward the 270.
Thus a single vote contributing to the prevailing candidate in a state with more population nets more weight than a single vote in less populated states.
