Anyone ever converted a Mercury 4 stroke from control steering to tiller handle? I see there is something called a Mercury Big Tiller that runs up to $2000 to buy just the parts alone. There has got to be a more affordable way of doing this. I don't need the newest and most up to date tiller handle. Just looking for a decent tiller assembly that will do what its supposed to do. any input on a more affordable option is greatly appreciated

I’ve changed a few over in my time. We may have a used standard tiller still available. Give our office a call later this morning and speak with our secretary. Leave a message with her that you’re looking for a used standard tiller for a 60. I can’t promise we still have a use one as that’s a popular model for crawfishermen and they drop in from time to time looking for used parts.

I've been looking for a 60 or 70hp to swap out with my surface drive in the summer. That's the issue I've run into, the cost to convert one from remote steering to the tiller.

Not the same model, but I converted a 25 johnson from steering wheel cables to a tiller. I found an outboard repair shop in Shreveport that had a some johnson tiller 25's that were broken, I bought the tiller from them for cheap, and it bolted up fairly easy. The tiller was quite a bit older than my motor, but it works fine.

I recently went from remote to tiller on my Yamaha. Figured out what I needed for the Yamaha big tiller set up and found them on eBay brand new for way cheaper than anywhere else, under $600. Not sure why Merc big tillers are so high. I’m more than sure you could find what you’re looking for on a fb group used if you can’t find it locally.

Just read the title at first and thought:" that will be a bad arse garden tiller".

Did you find a simpler/ more cost-effective fix? I'm looking to do this on a 2011 40 4 stroke Merc that I have been running into the same questions as you.

Thanks!
