Patriots willing to pay Tom Brady $30M per year to keep QB

The Patriots are intent on keeping Brady, obviously, believing he has one or two good years left. They are willing, sources say, to pay him in excess of $30 million per year to keep him in New England -- a significant commitment that would bring his salary more in line with other elite QBs.
That would help, but it may not be all. If Brady is going to return, he wants to see the team spend on some weapons -- which they attempted to do last offseason by signing Antonio Brown, only to have it fail. It would be unlike Bill Belichick to "go for it" but that may close the deal.
Technically, Brady is not allowed to sign a new deal with New England until free agency begins next month, but it is likely he will wait until then to even come close to an agreement.

Raiders are poised to pursue quarterback Tom Brady if he doesn't re-sign with the Patriots before free agency begins, league sources told ESPN.

Techincally, yes they did. Couple days prior to week 1 game.

The patriots drafted a WR in the 1st round and signed Antonio Brown
The year before they drafted a RB in the 1st round
Maybe the problem in NE is the QB and front office missing on draft picks

Tom and Gisele have a net worth of half a billion dollars, I can't imagine money is that big of a motivator for him at this point. I'm not sure what he has left to prove except to stay in the mix so Brees doesn't get all the passing records.

He's happily taken less money every year to help the team get more talented and it obviously worked.
Maybe he wants one more big payday to validate his efforts? Or maybe he doesn't really want the big money and just have one last challenge.

Whatever he does, I hope he stays with the Pats or retires. I think it helps your legacy to be a single team guy. It's always a little sad to see a legend past his prime on other teams.

And Michael Jordan didn't need the money, either his last 2 yrs with the Bulls, but they still paid him $30 million/yr 20+yrs ago after he took less for years.
It's a respect thing. It's aa "I've taken care of you all these years, now you take care of me."
And $30M/yr now for a QB still wouldn't even make Brady the highest paid in the league.
I think Wentz makes about $31 million/ yr and Dak wants more than that.
I bet Brady is looking to be the highest player in the league. And I don't blame him.
And yes, NE drafted a WR, and brought in AB, but the team has a history of whiffing on WRs forever and AB was a known giant risk.
They need a TE and an outside threat and a better RB bad.

I love seeing teams overpay for players who are way past their prime.

I love this argument, do you think something like this is actually discussed when negotiating? “Well Tom, your wife is loaded and we’ve paid you well over the years as well, so we are prepared to offer you less”

I really hope he retires or moves on. I don't think I can take another season of "Blah blah blah Belichick and Brady blah blah blah blah Brady and Belichick blah blah blah.

It has nothing to do with negotiations and everything to do with motivation. I'm not suggesting they should use it as leverage, merely that is that really his motivating factor now.

quote:keep in mind, Brady is very little involved with those discussions. Also, he is part of a union. The union and other qbs put a lot of pressure on him not to take a pay cut. It might seem easy, but it's not. It's a lot more complicated than he has a lot of money.

If he said he'd play for $20m, the uproar from the union would be huge. Everything else is just vary degrees of the same.

What about Teddy Bridgewater?

I can, he’s nowhere near that in value. Plus the fact that he’d only be a fit for a quarter of the league and even then only half of those teams have an interest in him. Me personally, I wouldn’t give him more than a 1 year $25 million deal. Hell some teams would probably go up to 30 million just for the impact on season tickets and merchandise.
But let’s look at the realistic landing spots for him:
New England
Miami (stop gap for Tua)
Indy (average QB with that roster is 10 wins)
Tenn. (Probably his best option)
LAC (another stopgap but good roster)
Chi (they believe they have a window with that D)
Tampa (keep it under 20 ints and you win the division plus the TB in TB merch)
The Maybes:
Vegas - okay yeah I get the headlines aspect of it, but it really doesn’t make short or long term sense for them. Carr has another 2 years and 42 million on his contract. So not only will you have to trade him and then pay Brady $10 million more when I’m all honesty, he likely won’t match or exceed what Carr gave you. Plus he puts you at least one if not two seasons behind on finding your long term solution at QB.
Jax - Good luck getting rid of Foles when he has 3 years $76 million left on his deal. But hey if you can do that, it’s not a bad situation.
NO - you have another year maybe two with that talent before you have to pay everyone, but honestly you’re better off with Teddy and hope that D can keep everyone under 20 and Thomas, Kamara, and Cook can make enough plays to win you games.
Car - If Rhule decides to move on from Cam, they aren’t a bad stop, especially with the new owner looking to make a splash. However with Luke retiring and Olsen leaving, this looks more like a two year rebuilding project rather than a win now kind of situation.
