I don't believe the various influenza viruses are the same type of virus as a coronavirus.
This latest coronavirus from China is a mutant strain that's new to the scene, hence why it is referred to as the novel (new) coronavirus.

LSURussian, Friend,
Your stock knowledge is unparalleled. Your microbiology and virology knowledge is lacking. Would you call Exxon and BP the same stock because they are oil producers? No. Nor in the bacterial world are streptococcus and staphylococcus the same, although they are similar.
Speaking on a superficial level, both the influenza virus and coronavirus contain spiked hemagglutinin, which allows the virus cell to bind to the host cell. About 1/5 of these hemagglutinin proteins in the flu viruses are neuraminidase. To my knowledge, the coronavirus does not contain on its surface this same trimeric protein. As a result neuramindase inhibitors, like oseltamivir and zanamivir, Tamiflu and Relenza, respectively, function to stop viral release, instead keeping the virus bound to the host cell on the host's sialic acid receptors, in most strains of influenza, but not coronavirus.

If you don't believe me will you believe the World Health Organization?
quote:
Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans.
Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.
Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.
Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.

BTW, you're frickin' weird. Go away.

Friend,
The article you posted no where indicates your claim: that influenza is in the coronavirus family: "Many flus are in the coronavirus family."
If you replaced flus with viruses or colds or infective diseases in humans, you would correct. However, as it stands you are incorrect. Influenza and coronaviruses are different viruses.
Sincerely,
TulaneLSU

I'm not sure about the market reaction, but the reaction where I live is intense. No toilet paper, rice, or much cleaning supplies on any shelves!
But as I said in my earlier post, this is a big deal for Asia manufacturing... Which affects global supply chains.

Interesting post.
The statistics, however, support that the fear of the virus is overblown.
There are a billion and half people in China and only 30000 or so infected? 700 dead? I suspect that have that many deaths over the same period from the common flu easily.
The good news is that the quarantines and forced travel bans occurred during their traditional spring festival time. Yes it will impact their economy but nothing like it would have had the travel bans happened any other time of the year.

Well done, sir. Important distinctions.

This thing is just getting cranked up. Certainly another “potential” tipping point, straw that breaks camels back type event.

I thought I heard today on one of the national news shows that the number of new cases and deaths are slowing.

Yeah yeah and it is just like the flu. YouTube Link - Nothing to see here just a little flu
Also multiple sources have said they are pretty sure China numbers are in the 50% of reality range based on what they are seeing else where in the world.
Just disinfecting the streets alittle for the flu

It’s concerning the number of famous people that have gotten it. Leads one to believe the virus is lurking in a lot of Americans unfortunately.

I was wondering if this thread would get bumped.

Is this a media driven "crisis"??
This is absolutely media driven.
80,000 Americans died of the flu in 2018, and nothing shut down.
1000 Americans died from the swine flu and the MSM said no one needs to panic.
Almost 13,000 Americans died from the swine flu when it ended. Nothing shut down.
There are over 6 billion people in the world and only 5,000 have died from this so far. This is less than the number of US deaths from the flu in 2018.
The numbers do not dictate the reaction we are seeing.
If we should react this way to 5000 deaths worldwide, then we should shut down the world every winter during flu season.
Even Warren Buffet has said he has not seen anything like this in 89 years, and he is 89 y/o.

Yes, I'm sure the World Health Organization declared this a global pandemic because of the media. JFC what is wrong with you
