Half-Life: Alyx will launch in March 2020 for PC-based VR headsets, but right now, Valve is giving gamers the opportunity to catch up on (almost) everything Half-Life-related at no expense. For the next two months, each of the Half-Life games will be free to play on Steam. This is basically a two-month-long trial; you won’t get to keep these games. Every game is compatible with Windows, Linux, and macOS (though all of these games are 32-bit apps, which means they don’t work on macOS 10.15 Catalina).
This promotion includes the original Half-Life (the Source version of the game with added physics to make it feel more modern to play, not the beautiful remaster Black Mesa) and its expansions, Half-Life: Blue Shift and Half-Life: Opposing Force. Also available for free is Half-Life 2 and its two episodic expansions. (According to Valve, Half-Life: Alyx takes place before the events of Half-Life 2.) Valve’s Half-Life 2: Lost Coast, its tech demo for HDR lightning, isn’t included in this promotion.

"prepare for unforeseen consequences"
Edt: I hope we don't get VR only LFD3.

Valve came out and said they aren't currently working on a L4D game. So not sure what that one guy was talking about.

I bought my first non-Mac laptop in 10 years and my Mac was a POS.
I get to play HL for the 1st time.

What is the difference between HL and HL Source besides the obvious in that one is on the Source Engine?

You answered your own question, idk what to tell you?
Valve was being sued for using too much iD tech in the GoldSrc engine, they needed to create their own engine to do what they wanted to do.
Source changed gaming, it is an incredible engine.

Chapters like in 2 and prettier water. That’s about it.

Bullet spray, fire too.
It's like the Source engine with the HL2 physics removed.

I remember being pissed that you couldn’t use the upgraded models and weapons on the Source one from Blue Shift.

I never played any of the expansions except Blue Shift. I've always wanted to play Opposing Force, just never.
They were still on GoldSrc right? Not the Source engine. I can't remember if the expansions ever got a Source version.

Opposing Force was a great expansion pack. Blue Shift was more of an extra they released after the DC port got cancelled at the last minute.

Blue Shift was decent. I remember enjoying it. This was also like 2001 though.

Yeah it hasn’t aged well.

The same can be said for HL. But, I know how good the game was for the time because I played it a few years after launch.
But, yeah.. if one wants to play HL1, just buy Black Mesa. Even without Xen, it is worth it.

Xen wasn't all that great anyways

Xen nearly ruins the game
