Know how "popular" star gazing is here but HAVE to ask about 247

I look at the ratings of LSU signees and admit it although I do watch videos too. is up with 247's own ratings of LSU signees/commits. There are 22 listed for LSU. Out of those 22, 247 itself rates 18 of those WORSE than the overall composite of ESPN, Scouts, Rivals, and their own. Only 4 are rated better than the composite and those very little higher where some of the LSU prospects by them are hundreds of rankings lower national. Do we call that the 247 LSU dip? That is more than just coincidence IMO.

What do you think it is then?

Couple of thoughts here. 247 usually does a few passes at their ratings throughout the camp season and football season. They update them and change them based on what they see with their own eyes and on highlights and game tape and camp performances. The other services tend to kind of go with the flow on measurements and hype. I do think 247 generally has the best true ratings. Their composite sometimes reflects higher or lower than their own rating of a kid, and that is also good, as it gives you an idea of the consensus on someone.
The other thing I would like to point out is that people tend to assume that a rating based on high school performance and future projection is locked in. It's not. If all kids had the exact same work ethic, coaching from their coaching staff, and willingness to accept coaching and to grow and learn, then the physical measureables would be the only things that mattered, but they aren't. The ratings are the best attempt by scouts to project where a kid *could* wind up based on their physical capabilities. Some diamonds in the rough really blossom at the college level. And some dominant high school kids kind of fizzle out. Take the ratings with a grain of salt. :)

I guarantee you recruits care more about the number of players a program puts in the league than the number of stars a recruiting site gives them.

I'm hoping that they don't evaluate talent that well. And believe me I HATE saying that because I've always thought ESPN was a total joke dating back to the time the UA game started being sponsored and shown by ESPN. Everybody noticed that if a player got picked by UA lords probably helped along by ESPN whispers, magically their positions nationally got bumped up dramatically to make the game look more attractive. And of course Rivals is the one infamous for the "bama bump". I will always remember Derrius Guice saying "I took a last minute visit to Alabama to get my 5th star". It worked...pre-Alabama visit, 4*...post Alabama visit 5*.

Everyone is out to get LSU

It's not a coincidence that the majority of LSU prospects 247 does not have great evaluations on. Most of our recruiting comes from Louisiana which has shite resources for evaluations on every single recruiting website. Who cares. LSU puts more players in the NFL than anyone else. That's your gauge.

Like your answer in general but the other services update quite often also. Rivals seems to update more than just about anyone. BTW, we will test our updating beliefs since McGlothern is as good an example as you will ever see in your life. The guy is 335 composite and the 666th best player on 247 itself. DM had a world class all star game...not just my opinion but also the announcers at the game. IF DM doesn't skyrocket up the ratings, then they are totally out to lunch! That guy clearly looks like a top 150 player.

Thanks for the nonsense answer. Guy, if you didn't give a frick, why did you post a response?

This was actually addressed in a recent 247 College Football Daily Podcast. They specifically mentioned the Bama Bump and talked about how a guy as good as Jefferson could end up as a 2 or 3 star.
They started about by strongly defending the star system based on NFL Draft stats. But that’s just the Draft. They didn’t go further into how they correlate with NFL success. They did admit that not seeing everyone for direct evals plays into some misses.
They blatantly admitted to using offers as a way to decide who to pay attention to. If you don’t have a ton of offers, they don’t bother with you. They said that and grades are why Jefferson slipped through the cracks. They also said the Bama Bump is real because they trust Saban as an evaluator. He isn’t the only one, but he is a big one. I just thought it was crazy that they fully admitted to doing this.
While I understand that about Saban, people pay these guys good money to do this work, not rely on coaches to do it for them. I think it’s weak to basically admit that they bump most Bama guys just because Nick Saban offered them and then just fall in line with their own coverage.

Excellent commentary.
Reality is you and I could do as well as they do. They admit it.

I have no problems with their offers logic. I have a gigantic problem with their grades issue. Psst, you are supposed to be rating a guy's ability to play football...not his competence in algebra. Rate the guy on football talent and let God sort out if he will become eligible. That is asinine on their part and sounds 100% like an EXCUSE!

For instance, Georgia is supposed to have 20 or so five stars on the roster.
We have beaten them senseless. We have a lot less than that.. and Kirby is the best coach ever..
So anyway. IMO Georgia. Alabama and Clemson recruits are over rated.
The recruiting sites change rating based on who offers.
Anyone who thinks player ratings that go four digits to the right of the decimal point is fooling themselves.
Whatever... MLB uses a five factor rating system across five tools. No decimal points.

IMO, espn has the most accurate reviews.

The marketeers selling their service, that's who.
Since O came to LSU its a constant theme, Georgia is loading up with five star recruits.
What happened? Smart is 0-2 vs Orgeron.

noticed that a while back. Almost every LSU commitment is rated way lower by 247 than by ESPN and Rivals.
take our two QB's for example, Max Johnson is rated 251 by the composite and 588 by 247
TJ Finley is rated 492 by the composite and 736 by 247
This bothers me due to I always considered 247 the best of the recruit services sites. But whether it is 492 or 736 for Finley and 251 or 588 for Johnson, I am sure our coaching staff sees something in them much higher than that or they wouldn't have offered. Out of all the ratings, seems the coaching staff does the best at evaluating them.
