I am looking at buying my son a truck. He is looking at a 2015 XLT Sport with a 2.7 EcoBoost. Anyone have experience with that truck/engine?
TIA.

Get the V8. A small turbo V6 like that has no place in an F150.
The wear on that engine by forcing that much air into it to power >4500 lbs of truck is immense.

I've had a 2017 with the 2.7 for several years. It's been a solid engine and is a lot more peppy than you'd think. Sounds like a sewing machine though.

2.7 ecoboost is fine for hauling groceries, garbage and girls.

As in his friends will make fun of him if it is not a 4X4?
He is also looking at a 2017 Dodge Hemi 4X4 with the Lone Star package. It is something like 24 inch wheels and a lift package. It rides like a stinking buckboard.
The power with the twin turbos did surprise me with the amount of pep it had and it gets 22 MPG.

That's basically what he will be doing and taking it deer hunting but no 4X4 needed where we go.
I have the Chevy 3500 if we need to haul things.

I sell used vehicles for a living, in Montana, where we see thousands of trucks traded in a year.
We get a LOT of EcoBoost F150s traded in with between 90k and 110k miles. They do not age well and have lots of pricey issues as the miles increase. Oil lines to the turbos, turbos themselves, timing chains, head gaskets are all weak points. We wholesale a large portion of the over-100k EcoBoosts we get on trade, because a lot of them are too fricked up to be worth keeping.
Granted, these are all things that apply to the 3.5L specifically. Maybe the 2.7L is better. I have no experience with those.
Bottom line is, I see hundreds of used EcoBoost F150s a year, and based on my experience, I wouldn’t buy one with more than 50k miles.

Also, they are asking around NADA clean retail but have had the truck for over 90 days. It has been a long time since I bought a used vehicle and I used to use loan value as a guide to how much to offer.
Any thoughts to how much negotiating room they may have?

Do not buy the ecoboost or anything with eco in the name.

Make sure it's a crew cab so there's plenty of room in the backseat for all the gay sex that happens in trucks with a 2.7 liter engine

the 2.7 would satisfy the needs of probably 95% of truck drivers. It has 325 hp, 400 ft torque and can tow something like 9000 lbs.

yes it does, but my gas mileage would slip to 10-12 mpg anytime I hooked up a trailer.

the engine itself is great and mine towed better than my old 2500. everything else (TRANSMISSION) was crap and i literally fled the scene after i traded it in before they changed their mind at the dealership
