James Wiseman, who was closing in on his return to Memphis against USF on January 12, has now left Memphis to sign with an agent and prepare for the NBA Draft.

N'Faly Dante, the 2020 recruit that reclassified, finally got cleared for Oregon and notched 11 points in 14 minutes against Montana last night. He could turn Oregon into a force come March

What year can they start going straight from high school again? It's so dumb to have this charade every year with guys that want nothing to do with going to college.

It would suck for Memphis if they get probation for those two games they stood up to the NCAA.

Nothing set in stone yet, but 2022 was the target date back in May

Wait they risked possible unheard of sanctions to stick with him and play him... and then he leaves when everything is almost over?

I don’t blame the guy. Why risk tens of millions of dollars to make a school money when you have no intention of earning a degree? The rule is dumb.

I get the reasoning for Wiseman. He played 3 games and averaged 19 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks in 23 minutes per game.

Draft stock wise, the rest of the season could only jeopardize his position at #1. The reality of the OAD rule is that he only ever went to Memphis because he couldn't enter the draft last year.

The kid from Memphis probably didn’t pass his classes first semester. Timing fits that narrative.

No reason for him to pay that money back to come play for good ole state U for two months

One and done rule is so ridiculous

Let the ones that want to go pro, go pro!

Nobody forced him to go to college. He made that decision and quit on his team in the middle of the year. I'm not sure why that should be praised.

The draft is in the summer. Why does he need to leave now?

My guess is he didn't actually go to any classes in the fall, and is now academically ineligible.

They need to move to a similar rule as baseball. If you got to a 4 year school, you have to wait 2/3 years depending on your age.

Especially with the potential number 1 picks playing poorly, coming back could only hurt his stock. Darius Garland was a top 5 pick for playing well against a couple crappy mid majors and would not have been that highly selected had he not gotten injured.

The way the draft class looks, the only way Wiseman could change his position is if he gets injured.

I'd figure that's the reason. His tools and production in the short season...he's shown all he can. It's him and Edwards for #1, but really, he can't improve his stock with play.

No doubt he looked really good in the 3 games he played.

But he's basically taking a season off of play. And after he is drafted, he is going to be expected to play in close to 90 games, depending on pre-season, post-season, and "load management".

Part of success is being able to do it over the course of a season. It's hard enough for guys to adjust from 37 games to 90. He's going from 3 to 90.

Curious if the NBA front offices are concerned about that.

Or he wasn't going to be able to pay back the $12,000 he needed to pay back in order to have eligibility restored (shocker).
