Yeah you can buy the 1' or 1 1/4' wooden dowel at hardware stores for something like $2/ ft. I know Home Depot has it and many of your local lumber yards, I don't think Lowe's carries it. Its for closets. Can probably find some bamboo on Craigslist or FB marketplace for cheap too.
Our flounder gigs are bamboo and they work fine for us, we usually go in a 14 ft flat boat and just use it to push pole us around. So its definitely serviceable.
