Dog training pond in/near Metairie

anyone know of a good pond in or near Metairie to train a young retriever? It is time to get my youngster's toes wet. Any tips are greatly appreciated.

The spillway might be your best bet.Not sure if it is frowned upon but City Park?

I used to go on the back trails of scout island where they run along the pond in city park, never had a problem as long as I stayed away from people. After a while I preferred finding grassy ditches with thick stuff along the edges, gave a bit more of a realistic scenario if a dead bird in the marsh.

Definitely was wondering if Lafreniere had good ponds. I trained my last dog in Baton Rouge at the burbank soccer complex in the dog ponds. Something similar would be ideal.
Thanks for the ideas guys

Lafrieniere the park rangers always come tell me something about having the dog on a leash unless it’s a dog park. On the lake side of the levee behind Lake Villa drive has been a good spot for me. I shoot the dummy launchers and everything back there without any issues. There are some gators in the pumping station canal, but I have not seen them in the actual pond back there. That being said, I only work the dogs back there when it’s cooler. The rangers don’t do as great a job of keeping the gators out of the spillway pond as they used to.

Thanks. Gators obviously a concern. I'll give the lake side of the levee a try as you suggested. Might try city park for the first of times just to get her used to water--need somewhere I can wade in with her at first, so hopefully that will work.

lafreneiere a no go.... no easy in / out.
city park has some fair spots.. but.. lots of broken glass/metal in water near bank...
find some ponds along river batture...
small pond in west end park actually has a some practical use.
golf courses have some decent and technically good ponds..
but when i live in metairie... went to spots other than the spill way .... about 2% of the time......
seawall at lake a very very bad idea.. bottom steps slippery as heck.....

quote:the front ponds are basically gator free..... further from the river in the deeper ponds are where the gators are.... they are gettting heat to cull more though.

Those front ponds designated as dog training ponds are definitely the safest. I still always wait around for a while to see if one pops up before putting my dogs in though. I had a very close call one point before the most recent opening. I have also been out there at night, and it would shock you at the amount of red eyes you see in those ponds. The majority I have seen in there are babies, but you just have to be aware.
My uncle used to be one of the top civilians in the corps. He was a great help in getting the rangers/nuisance trappers to come out there to remove them from those ponds any time I would ask. I have definitely seen an increase in larger gators in the dog training ponds since he has retired. The most recent time I was out there was two days before the Coastal Zone opener and did not see any.

Check parish leash law, many have an out for working animals or animals who are wearing e collars. Will need to download a copy to your phone so they can actually read it. Most of the dog popo don't know the law (strange)

end of Lake Villa, walk over the levee... lake stays shallow for a good ways out.

The west side of Bayou S John is very shallow too.

After a quick search of the Jefferson Parish leash laws I found this:
So, if you have an e collar, I would argue that you are good.
CantFnStopIt, if you are ever looking for someone to train with around there, let me know. I'm always down and always looking for new spots.

But they tend to cry when you know more about the laws than they do. It's easier for them to try and bluff you into leaving than correct their misinformation.

Everyone thanks for the tips. Important thing for me is distance from home as well. I live just across causeway from old Metairie, and with work daylight hours are tough to come by. Also, my dog is only 11 weeks so if someone tickets me for her they are going to hell and that’s their problem. Bullred, appreciate the offer. Email? I’ll hit you up sometime as the pup gets older and can do more.
