I drove from St. Louis to Chicago in April. It was like a five hour drive. It made me look at this film differently.

Yeah it probably should have been a longer and more complex route with more back road type of travel required, but you have to remember back in the 80s there were no cell phones, GPS, no online booking, ATMs etc. Just the act of finding a bus station, rental car, gas station, hotel etc was all quite a bit more complicated than it is now.

Obviously it’s over the top but getting from A to B back then could definitely be an adventure.

Making that drive (and just about everything else they have to do in that movie) is a hell of a lot easier now than it was back then.

For example, these days Steve Martin wouldn't have needed his rental agreement paperwork to get a different car from the airport car rental company in the famous "You're fricked" scene. Now the lady would just check his ID and run his credit card through the system before finding a different car for him.

i watched the movie last night and definitely googled the driving time and it was 4:30. major flaw but it was a different time
