It's a forced tradition to get likes on social media. Our group of friends are getting together Thanksgiving night to watch the Saints after we all eat with our families that day. We hang out all the time. This isn't any different than those times, but I'd assume some folks would call this "Friendsgiving"
ETA: I assumed Friendsgiving was a unique event --> Friends getting together to cook, drink and hang out around Thanksgiving. Different from all of the other times of just getting together one night and drinking and calling it #Friendsgiving, because friends get together and do stuff like that all the time.
But people are throwing the term around on social media to just show they had one when it looks just like all of the other times they hang out lol

It's a time for friends to get together when they're in town for the holiday and can't because family time on Thursday.

It’s so young adults can hang out and cook a big thanksgiving feast. Most everyone typically leaves or is busy with family during thanksgiving and has their parents take care of the entire event. Some people want to host their own thing.
Literally everything young people do is for social media. Singling Friendsgiving out as some maniacal way to get likes on social media is dumb.

My wife and I are invited to two “friendsgivings” every year and not once has pictures emerged on FB or IG because we don’t hang out with Dusty and Kayleigh’s of the world in Denham Springs.
