Posted on 11/16/19 at 7:43 pm to upgrayedd

So it's your understanding that this money will be immune to any austerity measures in the future?

Yes, it's my belief that if enacted, this dividend will be available to every american citizen over 18 moving forward.
If you are asking how it is paid for, it's a new VAT, coupled with decreased costs in existing social programs that are not allowed to stack with this, increased tax revenue from economic activity spurred by increasing everyone's buying power and a few other things.

That's extremely naive of you, friend

???? "moving forward" from when, exactly?

Well I believe it would be beneficial and seen as a very important piece that keeps the economy flowing.
My bigger fear is a future govt increasing the amount of the payouts to some absurd level. But I have to trust in the future people to be level headed and thinking ahead, which very well could be naive

In the hypothetical scenario that yang wins
Posted on 11/16/19 at 7:57 pm to Sneaky__Sally
Your assumption that substituting a flat rate for dedicated welfare funds is naive. There are many reasons why people on welfare are poor. Mismanagement of money is the #1 reason.

So, when does this start, and what should someone look for to validate that this process has started??
Be specific.
Thanks.

I agree on the Manhattan Project scale effort on fusion..I think its the ultimate answer to our power generation needs.
I believe the fuel cell technology we have is much preferable to messing with the hybrids and electric cars. We have natural gas in abundance to produce hydrogen and we need to figure out ways to separate it from seawater efficiently and economically. It works and vehicles run well on it. No massive batteries or extra power generation plants.

Eta: the freedom dividend is an either or situation for a lot of welfare programs - so people could choose to stick to their current programs. I just realized that may be what you mean by asking when the money is gone...
I dont think this is some magical solution - I think long term, those income floor couple with changes in education, etc. Could help some people climb out of the welfare hole.
But I also think it could significantly help people like you (I assume you arent an OT Baller with millions and millions in the bank) and me put money directly to improve our lives. I think there are various concerns like housing, healthcare and student loan debt and people could put money directly to what impacts them most, making it very efficient in terms of alleviating people problems as opposed to a govt program.
I also think that automation is fundamentally changing how our economy works, which will significantly increase with the implementation of AI. The transition period will need to be managed as people's jobs are impacted (again, looking at growing wealth gap).
I want to get ahead of that problem, and I think Yang is the best one to move forward. If he gets elected and doesnt manage to pass the freedom dividend, I would still be extremely happy and think it would be a great thing for the country

Yang winning the election? Im not sure we are taking about the same thing.

I'll give you a simple example.
My uncle used to work for FEMA. There was a storm (Gustav, IIRC) that was predicted to hit NOLA. FEMA was extremely paranoid after Katrina, so they decided to send many people to Memphis via train. When they boarded, they were given 3 days worth of rations - plenty of food for the trip plus extra. They all went through their supplies in less than a day and were demanding more. Well, they almost had a riot on their hands when they informed these people there were no more rations available.
These people don't look beyond their instant gratification. If you give them $1k/month and reduce their other benefits, they'll demand the precious benefits in addition to their new monthly stipend.

Fair enough. Maybe not even be talking about the same thing?
I took your comment to claim that this miraculous quantum leap in applicable technology would somehow *poof* into reality simply because of Yang and his vision, resulting in online workable Thorium reactor technology and helping "save the planet" by 2027.
If I'm wrong about that, can you clarify your position?
Thanks.

I was talking to the poster about the freedom dividend policy (I quoted somone mentioning it in my first post).
Dont know much about thorium, but am a fan of nuclear and think investment in new and clean technology will be beneficial. Definitely understand it is an aggressive forecast for implementation.

If he switched his universal income name to a tax credit it would pick up a lot of steam. Everyone loves tax credits. Instead of everyone getting a monthly check they just got a tax credit then it would have overwhelming support.

There are already far left people complaining that is doesnt stack with everything, etc. (Yang is starting to get attacked from some of the Democrats now that he has convinced them he isnt a joke.)
My thought is that I think this will be a benefit to so many other people, that the few that dont use it for advancement or make good choices and those that complain about not getting enough are an acceptable byproduct. Again, I'm hoping the future govt / leaders dont change it to an absurd amount.
I just dont have a positive view of where the country is headed, so my concerns about the implementation of UBI are overshadowed. Again, I'd be extremely happy with yang as president even without the implementation of UBI.

I just don't understand the point of charging people more money so they can get a check every month.
