quote:

“We absolutely need to have an adequate budget to provide basic city services,” she said.

After a re-assessment, a government agency “roll back” millages to keep taxes from going up. They can, however, later vote to roll forward a millage. In other words, a property tax increase.

Cantrell had sought to roll forward the city’s millages 100 percent but later asked the council to roll them forward 50 percent.

Part of the reason Cantrell is pushing for higher property taxes is to get away from the practice of using one-time money -- think federal dollars that came in after Katrina -- to pay for the city’s day-to-day operations.

“Pay raises for police officers? One-time money did that,” Cantrell said. “That’s no longer available.”

The mayor has proposed a $722 million budget for next year, and property taxes would make up nearly a quarter of that.

She is asking the council to approve another $6.9 million in property taxes. She says that for many homeowners, it would only cost them a few extra bucks a month.

quote:

Her administration has warned of things such as slower response times from police and fire, cuts to recycling, closing down rec centers or libraries -- or even longer waits to fill potholes if they can't get the extra money.

“I don’t make idle threats,” Cantrell said. “I’m telling you if we don’t see a modest roll forward -- $6.9 million? Come on. Yes, we will have to look at how we can make cuts.

I along with my entire family proudly voted "no."

The nerve of this bitch to increase taxes after the assessor just fricked everyone up the arse.

Progs must be happy.

I love how they come up with catch phrases for tax increases like "roll forward"

No, one time money should not pay for day to day operations. That is one of the reasons that drainage is such a disaster. The FEMA money was diverted to cover other irresponsible government. She needs to look at cutting some of the fat and waste in her offices and in the government overall.

I don't understand this sentence.

Are they trying to say, "After a re-assessment, there is an automatic government agency "roll back" of millages to keep taxes from going up."?

Have the millages been rolled back, i.e., will people pay a lesser percentage because of the enormous increase in valuation of their property?

Maybe this is "property tax-speak," but I don't really understand it.

NO 722 million dollar budget
EBR 1 Billion dollar budget and that’s not counting Zachary, Baker and Central’s budget.

NO estimated 391,006 population (2018) growing
EBR estimated 440,956 (2018) shrinking

Why the big difference? Why is EBR so high?

Would not old your breath on that one. NOLA will keep electing democrats and wonder why nothing ever changes. A conservative could maybe not do any better, but it's about time to see that the libs are incapable of making actual progress.

Is that an apples to apples comparison? Is NOLA budget only the general fund?

I have to agree with not wanting to use one time money for recurring expenses.

Is she really saying that she needs some more tax dollars to skim off of so she can get a new 2020 Benz lease?
