Shotgun for my 14 year old son

Looking to get a shotgun for my 14 year old son. I am not very familiar with shotguns especially pump action as I have always just shot crack barrels. He has some Bass Pro cards he wants to put up towards one. I figured I would get a 12 gauge for him but wasn't sure of brands and models I should look at. The budget is between $300-$500.
I saw Bass Pro has some Stoeger's and Benelli's within that budget. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Most important thing for shotguns is fit IMO.
Is he still growing? Being able to adjust length of pull could be an important consideration.

Good 20 will last him for quite a few years.
I was a giant kid so I had a 12. My friend shot a 20.
My dad just gave me an old Remington wingmaster 20g pump and it's so damn nice. Looks brand fricking new.
You can get a nice 20g for that price point. Shop used you can get a real nice one. He's going to try them.
Remember if it's cold and he's wearing a jacket it's going to shorten his pull. Hell have to bring the butt up and out to get to shoulder.

Open to 20 gauge. He is 5'-3". He is small for his age but is starting to hit his growing spurt in the past year.

I got a supernova back in 2008. Still works great.
It's a good first shotgun. Some think it's ugly, but it's very versatile. I've used it dove hunting, turkey hunting, and almost everything else in between.

I saved up and bought an 870 Express 12 guage when I was 15. I've had it for about 20 years now. I've used it as a spear, a paddle, a club, and a gun. The only time it ever gave me trouble was when it spent a few hours underwater and the wood swole up so much I couldnt cycle it. its killed 20 or so Turky, a few deer, quite a few ducks, a million dove, and a bunch of squirrels. They are cheap enough to where if he doesnt like it or doesnt fit just buy home something else.

He would mainly use it for Turkey season.

If you get a Remington, DO NOT GET A NEW ONE.
If you can find one that’s 20 yrs old and in good shape, go for it.
If you get a new one you will constantly be fighting rust on the gun.

870s aren’t what they used to be. Super novas can be really heavy too. I would go for a moss Berg if you can. Honestly with the loads that they have for turkey today, a 20 would be just fine for him too.

...and the Benelli Nova can't be adjusted. Stock and receiver are all one piece. I had one for a while. Was a great gun except it didn't fit me and I couldn't hit a barn with it.
In your price range.
Semi Auto: Stoeger M3000 12ga or M3020 20ga.
Mossberg 930 12ga, or SA-20 20ga.
Pump: Rem 870, Mossberg 500, Winchester SXP.
If you have a Cabela's nearby, check their used guns and see what kind of deal you might find there. I rarely buy a new gun anymore if I can find a lightly used one for less money.

My 20 gauge pump recoils harder than my 12 gauge semiautomatic.
