Based on what I am seeing, Jim Harrick’s probably one of the worst coaches in the modern era (1985 to present) to win one.
Not a bad coach by any means but most of the list is made up of guys who are or will be in the HOF like Knight, K, Crum, Izzo, etc.
I basically narrowed the list down to him, Gary Williams of Maryland, Steve Fisher of Michigan, Nolan Richardson of Arkansas, Tubby Smth, and Harrick. Of those, Harrick seemed to have the least sustained success and a lesser win percentage.
Fisher won one title and reached two more finals with Michigan, albeit ones vacated due to the Fav Five.
Gary Williams has a ton of wins in the ACC, which is typically one of the best if not the best basketball conference.
Nolan Richardson had an insane winning percentage of about .700%, he just trailed off toward the end of his career as Arky continued on in the SEC.
Tubby hasn’t stayed too many places long but he wins everywhere and he has plenty of them.
Harrick’s history of questionable compliance issues called off by the end of his career at Georgia points it at him.

Cal has a better winning W/L% (.780) over K (.767)
Cal stats are
Career Record (major schools): 27 Years, 750-211, .780 W-L%
Schools: Massachusetts (193-71), Memphis (252-69) and Kentucky (305-71)
Conference Champion: 17 Times (Reg. Seas.), 15 Times (Tourn.)
NCAA Tournament: 20 Years (56-19), 6 Final Fours, 1 Championship
NCAA Champion: 2012
3x SEC COY
I would say Cal is far from underperforming.

Nolan only ends up on the list because the list of title winning coaches is that damn impressive. He got dropped from consideration upon seeing exactly how dominant he was, like with Fisher.

And who knows what harricks career looks like if not for his bullshite at UCLA
Posted on 10/27/19 at 7:34 pm to WestCoastAg
Or his bullshite at Georgia, as he had them looking pretty good at the time the scam class crap got exposed.

Having losing conference records at both Minnesota and Texas Tech is winning everywhere?
Seriously, did you read my OP? Tubby’s been a loser everywhere since UK. I’ll grant that he was a decent coach at UK, but his resume since has been bad.

Problem is though he repeated it at UGA. Harrick makes Pearl look like a saint.
Pearl is only a notch below Bliss in terms of weasels.

He had a losing overall record at Texas Tech, not just a losing conference record. shite.
Posted on 10/27/19 at 7:41 pm to WildcatMike
Harrick had a higher win % than Tubby, and he never inherited a gold mine like Tubby did at UK.
Not sure why Tubby would be ranked above Harrick.

Tubby should had stepped away after Minnesota. But you can not say Tubby is the worst...his NCAA tournament record is pretty solid.
Posted on 10/27/19 at 7:44 pm to Dude88
Harrick’s NCAA tournament record was lame.
Posted on 10/27/19 at 7:46 pm to Dude88
Did Tubby inherit a gold mine when he took Minnesota, an 8-win team, to 20+ wins and a tourney bid his first season? Tubby definitely had faults, but I wouldn’t call him the worst coach to ever win a title
Posted on 10/27/19 at 7:47 pm to Dude88
Nah he just walked into URI that had Mobley and pulled strings for Odom
He walked into UCLA that had 5 NBA players on it in 88/89

Nolan should not even be mentioned as the worst to win a title.
