Shams: Pels don't believe Zion's weight contributed to injury

It's behind the Athletic paywall, but here are a few snippets:
Also mentions that he initially complained about the soreness two days after the Spurs game and the team initially thought the MRI was only precautionary. May not have caught this until much later had they not opted to cover their bases with the MRI.

Sources with knowledge of the situation have told The Athletic that Williamson and the Pelicans cannot pinpoint one specific moment when the injury occurred.

Since the injury became public last week, people around the NBA have discussed whether Williamson needs to shed weight to lessen the stress on his knees. Williamson’s weight is mostly a consequence of being so muscular, however, and not a case of a player who is overweight due to lack of conditioning. Those closest to him and around the Pelicans rave about his work ethic and habits on and off the floor.

Dejaun Blair 2.0 on the way

I mean this is semantics. Zion is in shape & not "overweight", however the way Zion plays and the way he is built (aka his weight) both place excess force on his meniscus.

This. Can his knees take the pressure from his play style...

But if the issue isn't that he's out of shape and carrying too much body fat like some have suggested and him needing to actually cut down on muscle mass to slim down and drop weight (if the team thought he needed to), it's a slightly different conversation.

Weight is weight. It takes more force to explode upwards if you’re having to lift more weight. His legs are not strong enough to consistently do that without wear and tear. But I don’t think he should lose much weight, I think he needs to focus on strengthening his lower body

Yep. If he cannot lose anymore fat & has to play around 280 due to his muscle (which is the claim that's being made), then he also must have a much stronger lower body to protect his joints and ligaments.
This is where Aaron Nelson steps in and must prove why he's the best in the business

Yea Zion’s combo of size and athleticism is where he gets his advantage. He just needs the conditioning and training to be able to do it on a grueling NBA schedule

And it feels like the aim of this article is to dispel any indication that Zion is "fat".
is Zion 284 because he's muscular (aka hard-worker) or because he is eats too much/doesn't exercise enough/does too many publicity events (aka fat/lazy)?

I just hope they didnt do the D-wade short term meniscus surgery so he can come back quicker.

Zion also hid the injury.
Kid wants to play and I cant be mad at him for that.

Zion Williamson climbed onto the training table inside the New Orleans Pelicans’ practice facility last Wednesday and finally admitted something. That’s when the prized rookie informed the staff that he felt some tightness in his right knee, sources have told The Athletic. This admission came three days after a dominant 22-point, 10-rebound game against the San Antonio Spurs — which had been followed by a day off on Monday and a full participatory day of practice on Tuesday. Once Williamson informed the Pelicans of how his knee felt, the team took the proactive measure of having him sit out the live practice on Wednesday and undergo an MRI. It was expected to be a precautionary MRI, but results showed a torn meniscus, and on Monday, Williamson underwent arthroscopic surgery and was ruled out six to eight weeks. Sources with knowledge of the situation have told The Athletic that Williamson and the Pelicans cannot pinpoint one specific moment when the injury...

I didn't take that as he "hid it". It sounded to me more like it took a few days before he started feeling soreness and mentioned it to the training staff.

I'm a physical therapist, and I agree with you. We can all speculate, even us who are educated on this issue and in the medical field. But, the bottom line is that Aaron Nelson and the medical staff actually evaluating him must be trusted and not doubted at this point on both the way to handle this injury and Zion as a whole going forward.

Zion also hid the injury.
I don't think hid is even the right word, he just didn't feel it like a normal human being. Listen to Shams talking about it in the video clip. LINK
quote:
Alvin Gentry had indicated that it occurred last Sunday against the San Antonio Spurs, but I'm told the team and Williamson never really found or reported swelling in that knee until last Wednesday when Williamson reported some tightness
My take on that is with this injury some level of pain and swelling is expected, but all Zion experienced was tightness.
ETA:

David Griffin tells us Zion is an elite athlete and in elite condition. Says weight wasn’t an issue in the injury.
Says Zion never had swelling the knee and wasn’t experiencing much pain. Still not sure when it happened.

thing is that lateral meniscus injuries don't have the intense symptoms of a medial meniscus injury.
so there is a strong possibility that Zion didn't really think it was a big enough deal to mention his knee to the Pels training staff

it just makes intuitive sense. if you want to reduce the amount of force & torque on ligaments & tendons, increase muscular strength

Modern medicine is continuously evolving so here's hoping. From what I understand the repair option isn't always possible and sometimes you have to remove the damaged parts.
D wade is a future hall of Famer and 3 time NBA champion tho. I'd be willing to take that lol
